Description
The first of my entries for 's Land of Fairy Tales contest , featuring the grandmother of my personal favorite. Getting ideas down was a little tricky, but after taking a class on fairy tales and watching a select few TedED videos, I knew I wanted to draw the more obscure ones. The tale of Cupid and Psyche is a little bit of a funny case, as this originated from Ancient Greece, but the structure, and details of the mystery groom, separation, and reunion went on to influence more tales, this time featuring a beastly creature as the husband.

For those reasons, I really wanted to try my hand in depicting it, and after remembering the 2008 anime Kaiba, and how that love story parallels the Ancient Greek tale, I decided to have Kaiba and Neiro in the titular roles. The Kaiba wikia page has concept art of what Neiro looks like without her hood, which was helpful in how I wanted to draw her in the clothing the women would wear in those days. As for Kaiba, the wings were a must, and I replaced the triangular symbol on his belly with the first picture that came up when I searched for a symbol of cupid. If you look at the constellations in the sky, they are of Virgo joined by particular creatures that would play the part of the mystery groom in future retellings and versions post-Ancient Greece.

(Psst! If you also look closely at the sky, I had Kaiba's mother play the part of the villainous goddess, Aphrodite. Considering both of their actions, especially toward their own sons, they're still questionable even with what the intentions were behind them...)

Edit: I wasn't too fond of how the color of Neiro's hair came out, so I tried to fix that before photocopying it.

Even though I hate this stupid photocopier, I LOVE how this one came out, and I can't believe I never realized how much one of my favorite anime had in common with this tale! I just hope this still counts as a fairy tale, with its legacy and retellings over the centuries
