Description
scrappedSo as some of you may have noticed, this is probably the first truly anime-style drawing I've submitted in years (or maybe I'm exaggerating, but it is a long time). The reason for this is that... Anime is truly limiting. For me, it's just pure eye-candy. It is truly hard to knock on the right facial expression you want unless you take it on a realistic approach and shrink the eyes and grow the mouth. I've noticed this as I went on trying to improve in this style when I was younger... I mean, everyone likes anime style right? You see it on DA and go "wow, good stuff!" and probably fav it if it's either fanart you like or the artist put tons of effort into it.
This is where I stopped; effort? Probably in details in the outfit and background, right? The face is always the same expression unless you can truly pull it off (good example of this is *joodlez , she has one of the best styles I've seen in ages). I've always liked to draw facial expressions, it truly shows in my school agenda books. Even though my anatomy was WAY off before, I always liked to draw people happy, people having emo issues, people crying, weeping, laughing, angry, infuriated, confused... I liked exaggerating a bit sometimes as well. But once I started experimenting more realistic anatomy, I never went back. I could finally express what I never could before.
I'm still no pro, I still practice and I know that I still have so much yet to learn (and hopefully, have tons of improvement along the way)... Right now, I'm concentrating a bit on anatomy and colors since I feel that both of these can majorly change a picture's overall mood.
Anime was fun while it lasted, but it doesn't cut it anymore. XD I don't even draw it for the heck of it, it's more like a chore to me to try to get proportions off intentionally. Some might disagree with my opinions here, you're free to discuss it but no political debates 'lright?
ANYWHO, this is a shoutout to a new site called MANGABULLET!! It's a relatively new site created by ~Eddz and I think it'll become a major success in the future! Please join now! I've uploaded TONS of new artwork there that I haven't submitted over at DA, just to bribe a bit ;D

"Anime was fun while it lasted, but it doesn't cut it anymore."
You should ascertain beforehand that it's not you who is not "[cutting] it anymore."
"I don't even draw it for the heck of it, it's more like a chore to me to try to get proportions off intentionally."
Hahah, I find this intriguing... perhaps you should say such things after you have a solid grasp of anatomy and proportions, which I have noticed on multiple occasions that you do not.
You think you are sounding like an ~*~*aspiring artist*~*~ by renouncing your animu ways? I am sorry, but I agree with Mayshing that you just sound like a condescending art prof/prick.
Nice try on sucking up, but I can't respect anyone who puts down a style because they are not skilled enough to work with it.

Nit picking on old thoughts? It must be a fun pastime for you on a Holiday's Eve. Sipping on some good hot chocolate with marshmallows with that as well, I'm guessing? :0
Sorry man, I can't say anything in regards to it right now. My viewpoint of this subject has changed dramatically since early 2008, so now I'd be more than willing to say that I /did/ sound like a dumb prof-prick that didn't know what they were spitting at. Thanks for the nice reminder though, I'll work harder on acquiring the 'skills' to be able to work with it.
Have a nice holiday, dude!

Sorry, I didn't see you renouncing your "old thoughts" since it still appears to be in your gallery. And seeing as you are a chronic liar... chances are, you still think the same condescending way, especially now that you're in ~*~*art school*~*~.
Same to you too! ^_^

Have you ever heard of 'one learns most from their mistakes'? That's why I left it up.
Art school isn't what you think it is. Googly eye anime style can be oo'ed and aah'ed at between students and drawn for laughs, but it won't cut you any slack when it comes to portfolio's. Professors honestly don't give a shit for things like [link] where it can be appreciated elsewhere like DA or conventions. Not so much in an art institution. ;; There's a reason for that, I'm sure you know it.
Dude, I don't even know what we're talking about or trying to prove (unless you're still attached to labeling me as a chronic liar because... heck I don't know why either), so I'm just going to put an obligatory smiley

That's great that you write entire paragraphs and don't know what we're talking about. I didn't expect much from you in the first place, so you still get a gold star.

even if you don't care much for anime any more this is still adorable, but even better is your use of color (that's what drew me to this image). I love the greens, reds, and blues in his hair.
and just on what you said, I personally think it's easy to draw emotions with anime characters, at least for me, and I'm still learning.

I completely agree with what you're saying.
The worst part about the anime fad is how many teenagers draw in that style, are told constantly by their elders to study anatomy and realism, and they refuse to listen. Then they're screwed when it comes to proper art classes in college. I've been brushing up on my anatomy big-time for the past few months; at the same time I'm purging the manga-look-to-my-drawings out of my system.
Studying proper anatomy DOES make you a better artist, people!!

I have a serious problem with thinking that non-fanart stuff you draw is fanart. I looked at this and totally thought it was Luke. It makes me feel bad, like I'm some kind of fanbrat. D:
Anyway, I really love that color style! It looks like it was done with a brush and so the color seems so much more... personal than regular digital stuff. (Which people often seem to think Photoshop generates all by itself. WTF.) The hair and the scarf especially look really nice.
The goobery anime style does work well for baffled expressions and super sugary innocent ones like this, though. So, so cute. :'D
You're good, especially for someone who barely ever draws in this style. C:
(Whoa. TL;DR comment. Sorry. xD)

er... regarding to your rant, when you say "anime style" you meant the recent popular anime/big eyes/pointy to no nose/chibi-cuteness that you are doing here???
I thought you knew more than that about "anime style" to be honest.
You sounded like one of my prof, that honestly did not make me feel good about your rant...

Yeah, just about anything anime-styled I tend to avoid for the most part. There was that Pokemon Diamond and Pearl contest back on NSider that I entered with my Pokemon anime-themed entry...but aside from that, haven't really drawn anything like that. It takes too much effort, as simple as it usually appears.
Though I gotta say, even if you don't personally consider yourself a pro, you've definitely got prowess at least. Speaking of which, the color selection you went with is amazing. Reminds me of the watercolor atmosphere found in Yoshi's Island.
Very nice.

I am seeing this Mangabullet thing everywhere! Maybe I will join, just from the peer pressure. XD
In agreement with you on the rant, too. (: I like stylizing things and all, but I can't bring myself to do it to the extent I see in some anime...

It's nice to hear someone's opinion on it at least, instead of just something random like: 'WTF I DUN LIKE THIS DRAWING NO.' Everyone has their own style, and they should go along with it.
But when you say it's limiting...
The cuteness...
It's blinding. XD
