I think not .. watermark can not be removed without damaging the image.. This is when you want to change the background behind on any other..

depends.
some people like to put a signature on a whole drawing which mostly is in the bottom right corner?
I mean I know it's ugly but I put a watermark on the actual character I illustrate but for everyone who doesn't ...
but well I guess someone who really wants to steal art already figured out how to.

I also Watermark over the actual image subject myself. Watermarks and signatures off of it are far too easy to remove otherwise. It's a little harder to remove a watermark over a subject without damaging for the average thief.

Some lags of the Deviantart.. For a long time could not respond to the comments and publish new journal entries.Β

What about theft? No one can guess that the work was created by another artist?

They can guess, but guessing usually does no good unless that artist has a very unique style and is very popular. Take Rose Besch(BaraChan) for example. Very well known and very easy to tell work is hers.

Well, I have seen people who publish other artist's work. Typically, it became clear very quickly, if not immediately. I think that it is much more unpleasant and harder to prove when the work is used only partially as a reference.Β  Or two artists may have similar ideas.
