Well, it pretty much does everything: opens locked doors, scans, tracks, emits sonar, etc. It's like a high-tech swiss army knife. Heck, it was even used on several occasions to make a cell phone's service cover extreme time and space differences.
Knowing a Dalek when you see one is nothing to sneeze at - it could save your life!
