Looks like your questions prompted some cryptic and unusually high-def? memory, oooooh~ *wiggles fingers mysteriously*
(don’t mind me I’m just looking for lame excuses to throw in backstory)
also the discrepancy in art quality here is due to my stupid ass thinking I could actually work the more detailed style into a narrow timeframe– suffice to say that ain’t happenin lol
(had to rush to finish the other panels and it's very obvious, haha whoops~)

He's not sad at all, just introspective. It wasn't a bad memory per se, just one he hadn't thought about in a long time. If anything, you inspired a bit of sentimentality that he doesn't usually show to bubble up to the surface. C:

Ooooh, backstory *rubs hands*. This is really, really interesting. So much mystery to speculate over! One of the first things I noticed was the change from modern clothes to more mystical or perhaps historical stylings in the flashback. Also the fact that Gaster looks to be enchanting or using an enchanted scroll (or perhaps performing some sort of alchemy). I'm actually excited to see this! Ever since I watched that one little video animation with Gaster using an alchemy style circle to summon/build the CORE, I've been thinking of ways to incorporate something similar into my own Gaster's story (I already mentioned him studying alchemy in one of the Gaster Files, so it wouldn't be difficult, I think). I had an immediate thought on seeing how the parent is dressed whether said parent is still about (or was in the game). So excited to see more!
I love that, despite being Mr. Salty-buns, Gaster clearly cares about his brothers. It seems he is quite a bit older than them, as he looks to be pretty well grown in the flashback. I wouldn't be surprised if he has very strong paternal feelings mixed in with his brotherly ones.
Of course, the art is gorgeous! I think I kinda like how the flashback panels are more detailed and the current ones are more simplistic. The difference sets them apart form each other. The more detailed style gives the flashback panels an almost dreamlike or ethereal quality. I'm not sure how to explain it.

You're right on with the clothing. The scroll might not be quite what you think, but I'm right there with you in wanting to work those kinds of elements into Gaster's story, and I'm hoping I've found a unique but relevant way of doing it. That animation is fantastic, isn't it? I'm excited to see how you'll be incorporating the idea further into your story.
Might I ask what your thought is on said parent? I have a hunch, haha (I probably made it more obvious than I meant to).
Gaster is indeed much older than Sans and Papyrus, and you're right that he definitely holds some paternal feelings towards them. I wasn't originally planning to make him that much older, but ultimately the timeline wouldn't work like I need it to if he wasn't. Still, the brother dynamic is there and I like that it gives me more room to complicate his relationship with his siblings (they can butt heads and resent each other in ways that wouldn't happen between a parent and child, if that makes sense? I could go into stupid amounts of detail related to the minutiae of the three's relationship but I'll spare you, haha).
And thanks for saying the art looks good, I'm glad to hear the difference wasn't too jarring.

Hmmmm, now I'm intrigued by the scroll and how you'll be working those elements in! As for the parent, I admit I've developed a strong link between hooded cloak and that certain NPC. Of course, I might be wrong. Though if that is the direction, it does bring up many questions of why he says what he says or why he does what he does.
Yeah, there's definitely a difference between the power dynamic between siblings, and between parent and child. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. I've had to do similar finagling with Sans' age in my own version due to the timeline. Ha, I don't mind minutiae, though I understand wanting to keep stuff to reveal later!

Haha, don't be sorry. That's actually one of the points behind this, to show how in some ways, he is very much like their father. He took on the responsibility of raising and providing for them even though it shouldn't have been his burden to bear. But he does love them, even if he has a funny way of showing it most of the time. ;y

It amazes me how much of an interpretatable character Gaster is.
So much is canon of him but even more is just theories, speculation etc.
He is the example that an character does not need to exist in their universe to be fascinating.
We know so much but also so little of the doctor.
And the theorie of him being the brother of the skele-bros is just a grain of sand at a freakin' beach!
I have yet not seen a Gaster to dislike, and so i gonna love your blog of LostBrother!Gaster.

I agree, it's really quite stunning how popular Gaster is for a character who barely even exists. I guess it's that open-endedness that makes him so interesting.
