Copy-pasta from my tumblr but decided I would like to share more progress stuff on DA.
Werkin’ on Elsa cosplay!
I wanted to create a wig with a more natural “less cartoonish” look that still really looks like the character’s hairstyle. Since I haven’t got a 3D printer and don’t know how 3D printing wigs would work, I opted for a softer, more subdued look. I added 1.5 packs of extensions to the wig to make her braid thicker so it would approach “Disney Princess” volume without looking unbelievable.
I waffled a lot about the swept back bangs/pieces since she does have that “windswept hair” look but after doing more research and making that papercraft model that clearly shows the back of her head, I decided to tuck the ends into the top of the braid for a more tidy look.
I’m not sure what the top of the braid really is. I started out doing a large-weave herringbone braid then blended it out to the traditional 3-strand braid. Maybe the technical term is the “MADE IT WORK, AW YEAAA” braid. Anyway, while some of the pieces look “too long”, it is, as always, to compensate for the difference between wig-head size and human-head size.
After braiding the wig, I concealed the hairtie by wrapping some strands around it. Snowflakes are metal scrapbook charms with glitter accents and rhinestones attached. Each is either glued to a bobby pin or pin. I think I need to add a few more tiny snowflakes higher up on the braid but otherwise Elsa’s wig is pretty much done!

The waffling continued. After more consideration and studying the 3D models used in the film, art book (which is gorgeous if you like artbooks), as well as the Infinity figures I decided to go back to the crazy windswept pieces. At first they looked a bit messy for my liking but my previous trial lacked volume. I used more hair for the "spikes" I guess you would say, and they look much nicer this time. After trying the wig on a few more times and taking test photos, it looks even better. Sooo this is where it's now at!
MORE ELSA!!

I love the way you style the wig, it looks natural yet fits the character
May I ask, how did you sweep the fringes up to have the effect in this picture? By using hair spray to secure the hair sweep or is there any steps that are needed?
Thank you in advance and have a nice day! >W< Can't wait to see the costume <3

Hi there! I did not do anything really special or secret to style the wig. I pinned the wig to the foam head and styled it "face up" so that I was working with gravity. As for keeping things in place, I just used a little Got2Be Spike glue at the "roots" for extra strength and Got2Be Blasting spray elsewhere and dried the products with a hairdryer on low heat. Hope this helps you a bit

Good luck and happy shopping! There are so many nice wigs on Taobao it can be hard to choose or to just stick with the original shopping plan and not add a ton of other things.
I actually purchased the base wig on eBay so it may be worth checking there as well as many sellers ship their wigs worldwide for free. The extensions I used were purchased online from www.doctoredlocks.com as I could not buy the right color in a store near me but generally extensions can be purchased in most beauty/hair stores.

It's absolutely amazing! Holy *****!
Is it just one wig? Oh, I want to do it too, but I've no idea how to style a wig like that. o.o
Are you going to do a tutorial about it? Please?
Really really stunning! *.*

Thank you! It's 1 base wig plus one and a half packs of extensions that I added in to make the braid thicker and longer. I happened to have packs of extensions that matched, but there is no reason one could not use 2 wigs instead.
I could make a tutorial, except my wig is already done. I guess I will see if someone commissions one, in which case it would be easy to put one together.

Thank you! This is a Sepia wig which I got of eBay, but you can buy Sepia at most online wig stores too. It is just the 613 shade.

Is the wig a lace front? The whole thng looks very natural while still looking like the character.

Indeed it is! Lace front wigs are now my go-to choice when the character doesn't have bangs of any sort/swept back hair. I don't even bother trying to get regular wigs to do that kind of work. It is easier and looks better to start off with the lace front.
I'm really glad to hear that you think the styling was effective too. I was really trying to strike a balance between natural and "exactly like the character".

What's a lace front wig? Anyway, I really wanna do an Elsa cosplay, but had the idea to use a silver/white wig instead of a blond one. It fits the character more. I'll also (hopefully) be making the dress as well, since my mom's a seamstress.
Great wig btw!

A lace front wig is one that's made to simulate the natural hairline. These work for anything where the hair needs to be slicked back. Regular wigs cannot be "slicked back" without looking weird and/or requiring some coverup work because the mesh will be exposed and the wefts aren't sewn to allow the hair to go that direction.

Thanks. I am planning to wear it at Katsucon so, I'm sure I'll be one of the many Elsa's running amok. Still, it's a pretty recognizable costume so I'm sure you can find me. lol
