Let me tell you about being disorganized...- Like grabbing the wrong blonde wig for a costume
- Like leaving a belt at home, a belt which couldn't be substituted and was essential to the costume
I am slowly getting better about organization and I wanted to share 2 ways I try and keep my cosplay stuff under control so I can find what I need AND get it all to the convention.
You may be wondering why I bothered to show you how to make checklists: because these are portable and stay with your costume, whether you leave it on the hanger or pack it. Paper checklists are fine, but they can get damaged (torn/lost/dirty/water-damaged/etc.) Mini laminated checklists that you keep physically near the costume and can reuse are a better option.
You may also be wondering why I bothered showing you about labeling wigs: hint hint, a lot of people don't do it. When you have many wigs of a similar color, it can get confusing. Even if you have many wigs of different colors, you can't always see into the bags and labeling them takes the guesswork out of the process. Just find the name, grab it, and go.

personally I never make checklists but I always check, double check and triple check the night before the con.

Ah, I am too lazy to do triple checks etc. and tend to forget things if I get too busy (like doing a double/triple check LOL). Checklists allow me to check things once and then I'm done - no worries. But everyone has their own little system.

The cheklist is just brilliant. I usually have a rough time organizing my cosplays and when I need one, I have to take almost everything in my closet to get it and always forget something if I don't go in full cosplay attire to the conventions.
And using sticky notes for organizing wigs can be handy too if you store cosplays in bags.(Which I do for lack of space in my wardrobe :/ )

as much as possible i keep a character costume bag myself
where everything the character wears & needs is in the bag: from wig, costume, accessories, props, weapons to footwear

Ziploc bags come in so many sizes that there is something for most costume bits. They are primarily marketed for food storage here too.
I was actually referring to the plastic bags that things like bed linens or draperies are sold in here. They are clear plastic/vinyl with actual zippers. Do they package things like that in your country?

and yes we have those here too. but not everyone, esp the kids use it for costumes on a regular basis.

Same here man especially when it can be done cheaply. I'm glad there isn't a Container Store anywhere near me, I would go broke but be absurdly organized. Heck, there might even be little bins for each of my dogs, LOL.

OMG office supply hoarding. There's something about working in that kind of environment that makes you feel you must stock up on everything, even crap you don't use, because it's a scare commodity a work. As if you cannot just go into a store and buy more pens and paperclips when you run out, no. You must do it now, these will be useful in the zombie apocalypse.

Stealthos these are BRILLIANT ideas! Especially the check lists. Only once or twice have I had to look through my wigs and figure out what was what, but that was usually because I was getting a wig for a costume I hadn't work in a while and couldn't quite remember which wig I needed. >.> The checklist thing though could really come in handy. I'm always so paranoid when it comes time to pack for con that I'll forget something. If I ever get to where I can actually hang my costumes (right now they live in a box >.<) I am definitely doing this.

Glad you find this one helpful! Like I mentioned in the tutorial, even if you don't hang your costumes on hangers, you can just safety pin the loop to a costume to keep them together. Most of my stuff is stored hanging, but when it comes time to pack, many costumes get folded and put in my suitcase so this is where the safety pinning business comes in handy. I'd never make it to a con with every piece of a costume without a list. The 2 times I mentioned messing up [in the description] were for 2 costumes I hadn't made checklists for yet. Oops. LOL

I do these for costumes I need to fix or finish. I leave little checklists of things I still need to do.
And before a con I'll do a checklist like on your Jack Frost.

Checklists are the only way I get things done too! I have this wonderful Excel spreadsheet where I can list tasks and track progress. For whatever reason, giving myself deadlines and watching the progress bar fill up in the Excel sheet is way more motivating and satisfying than writing it on paper.
But yes, the 2 times I forgot items, it was because I hadn't made checklists for those costumes yet. Lessons learned man.
