So, how many of you have either bought wefts or made them, whether by sewing or using silicone caulk, then wondered what to do next?Adding wefts to a wig is quite easy but no one seems to describe the process in their own wig tutorials. So, in my tutorial I have broken down the process for you.
It is more like a set of guidelines, there is plenty of room for your own twists. I prefer to sew my wefts in, but heck, if you wanted to you could hot glue them into place (if you do not ever plan to remove the wefts). This tutorial visually shows how to add wefts inbetween pre-existing wefts. There are many more things you can do with wefts such as adding them to the edges of the wig for up-dos etc. The possibilities are endless.

How feasible is this technique for adding coloured streaks to a wig?

This tutorial works for adding any wefts, be they colored streaks or more of the same colored fiber for coverage (as I did in the tutorial).
All you need to do is trim the colored wefts to the desired size(s), sew them in, then style accordingly.

does the wig cap matter? i want to make a wig but i don't know what type of wig to get and im not sure if the different cap of a wig will let me sew them in or not.

I know on ebay you can buy the actual swiss wig lace caps so you can basically start designing your own wig. However, that's labor intensive and can be costly. You might find it easier to buy a wig close to what you want the end product to be and modify it for your project by adding/removing wefts, dyeing, styling it etc.
"Wig caps" matter, you don't want to try and add wefts to the kind of wig caps you pull over your hair to keep it in place. If you're working off a wig you bought and are modifying, you can sew things in or remove them very easily. Hope this helps a bit.

No - you do not want to trim that. You're just pulling hair back and out of the way to where you want to add the wefts. Once they've been sewn in, you let the hair you pulled back down, trim it to blend it with the rest of the wig, and can go ahead and style it as needed.

The ones in this tutorial were from another wig. However, you can buy packs of premade wefts from places like Arda and Epic Cosplay. You could also buy bulk hair and make your own wefts by sewing them, weaving them, or using clear silicone caulk. Hope this helps, if not, feel free to ask more questions!

Oh I'm not trying to add wefts to a wig, I'm wanting to start making my own wigs from scratch. I did find a couple of tutorials on making wefts, but not only does that seem like more hassle than it's worth, but I can't even find extensions/loose hair that will work for any of the wigs I'm wanting to make =/

I see. You probably already have checked places like iKickShins and Doctored locks, but have you browsed Amazon, eBay, or visited a local "ethnic" beauty shop (if applicable)? You can get loose hair or the premade wefts by looking for "weaving hair". If the color is the issue, weaving hair can be "dyed" just like wigs and comes in a variety of textures. Dyeing a whole wig's worth of wefts would be time-consuming, but if what you want doesn't exist and you want it to be precise, gotta make it exist LOL. That or you can always create custom color-blends with the hair if you don't feel like messing with dyes/inks.

I did not check iKickShins, but I will thanks! I did check Doctored locks, Amazon, and Ebay, but haven't had a chance to check my local stores yet. I didn't think about dying it though, I could get a pale blonde and should be able to make it any color ... I can't believe I didn't think about that XD Thanks!
But I really think that making my own wefts won't be worth it for me, so I'll keep looking for wefts!

well im cosplaying as hikaru in magic knight rayearth and its very hard to find a wig of her hairstyle. i have the wig that is her color but i dont have her braided pony tail. which im thinking to do this... do you think this would help?

It would work for that hairstyle and be pretty easy to accomplish. Especially as she has a lot of short layers on top, then a low braided ponytail. It should be very easy to do. I would advise getting and adding wig clips to the front of the wig for added stability as the braid is low and rather thick. You do not want to to cause your wig to slide backward off your head.

Depends on where you're adding them and what you want them to do but yea, you can add wefts to any wig for the most part.

I think such kind of hair wigs is baeatutiful. And I am also interested in the hair wigs and as I like to change my look sometimes with a new hair style, but having the hair cut is really a trouble, but each time I just buy cheap hair wigs online and told the seller the style I want and then soon I can find the one satify me. So I have never met the problem as you. Not long ago I get a BOB wigs for myself at www.hairwigsall.com/ and it bring me a new style as before.

I added wefts to my most recent cosplay wig to add volume and length. It looks pretty good (I added 6 layers and it had a clip in pony tail), but it still only blends in questionably. Should I add in more wefts (I can, but it's heavy as heck and the top needs to remain short) or give in and just cut it... or option 3?

If the wefts don't blend well, trim them carefully to blend with the rest of the wig. After you do that, see where you stand before adding more.

Yep you can just leave the longer wefts alone and not cut them. This also works when you want to add a different color weft in as well.

This...this is what I needed. I've been struggling with trying to get the damn wigs to look less sparse for ages, and now I can buy wefts and not sit there like an idiot. Thank you so much for this, it's been one of the most helpful and simple ways to help any cosplayer!

hello, at last I find smething close to what i'm trying to do, I am making disney's Ariel costume, though for the wig I didn't want a ridiculous intense Red colour becuase it looks silly in reall life on people, so I found one in this beautiful Red/Brown colour, from the photos it looked like it had enough on the fringe to play with, but when I received it, the fringe was a little shorter. A girl on cosplay directed me here as she used it to add to her wig but can't really describe to me how she did it.
I have added hair to the bottom of a wig for my Rapunzel, which was dead easy. But this time I have this little fringe and need to find a way to compleltey cut the whole fringe off and add layers, I've just bought another wig, so waiting on that to come. The fringe on it looks about the same length as in your wig here above. I did do Ariel's pink dress ast year and bought this long copper/Red wig, but really was more copper than any Red, but it did have a long fringe. The toruble I have also is even though I sprayed it with hair spray, is getting the fringe to stay up like a big poof in the air, it keeps flopping down, I put 2 hairs grips in it in the hair to hold it up, but it kind of ruins it when you can see hair grips in place.
This wig i've got now I spent hours getting the fringe to part on the side, but have now finaly done that part.
If I had your e-mail address maybe I could send you some photos of it and you could point me in the direction of adding hair from another wig to it so that I could have a very long thick fringe to play with, at the moment I only this little poof.

I cannot exactly tell what you mean in your post above but have you tried using a teasing comb to give the hair more volume?

It depends on your wig color and your location. For natural (usually darker varieties) you may be able to go to chain or local "ethnic" beauty shops for packages of hair for wefting. Some places even sell pre-sewn wefts. Most stores with fashion wigs will also carry hair for wefts/braids/dreads etc.
As most of my projects have required blonde shades or crazy colors so I have to buy them online at places like Doctored Locks or IKickShins.net. Either place is great to buy from. I am not sure what viable equivalents there are for shoppers outside of N. America though. You can also take wefts off other wigs and add them to the wig you are working on as well.
As to how to create wefts, most people use either of the below methods:
- Creating caulked wefts is somewhat simpler but can be messy and does require more time.
- Machine sewing wefts is more difficult but you don't have to wait as long because there is nothing to dry.

Would this method of sewing wefts in help to cover the mesh if I need to make parts for pigtails? This looks a lot easier than another tutorial I was thinking about using.

Actually, I have not tried using this method for parts. It may work depending on how thick the wefts are and how you go about it. I know of the tutorial here [link] that involves weaving hair through the wig mesh which is probably the same tutorial you have found.

Is there any way to add the wefts on to the top of a wig without it looking obvious? I want to achieve the look of a multi-colored wig. Would hand-dying and layering a wig on be a better idea?

Well, it will depend on how the wig is sewn at the top. You may be able to add some wefts in the colors you want without it looking weird. I would suggest pinning one into place to see if the rest of the fibers will lay flat and obscure the top of the weft. Every wig is different, but it can be done.
Dyeing chunks of hair already part of the wig can be messy and imprecise so if you decide to go this route, be sure to block off any other parts you do not want dyed.
