Description
Pimp a wig in 5 easy steps. Here's one of the promised tutorials. I hope it is helpful. My supply list is just things I used, I am in no way endorsing them or claiming that you must own the same brands to do this type of work. You can work with many tools from different brands to get similar results.

How did you add the swooshy bangs? I have a costume I'm working on that I need something exactly like that for.

I did not do anything particularly special or difficult. I just added a few short wefts to the wig, brushed the bangs the way I wanted them, saturated them in hairspray, and used a hairdryer to set the style. Hope this helps!

Do you have a certain shampoo/conditioner that you would recommend?

Stealthos-Aurion In reply to EndofForever [2010-10-23 20:02:00 +0000 UTC]
Nope! You need not worry about what you use on a synthetic wig like you would with your own hair because it's plastic. I typically use the little sample shampoo and conditioner packets they stick in magazines. I know I'll never use them, but they are the perfect amount for washing a wig.

Hahaha, working with heat and plastics is always iffy if not a few steps from disaster. At the same time I love it as it is so much fun and very effective if done successfully.

Thanks so much, this is really helpful!
A question though. Where can you buy thinning scissors? I've looked EVERYWHERE and can't find them!

Dog grooming places - Petco and the like! They usually run about $13ish a pair.

The wig was an ebay purchase. The few stores here that sell wigs are quite lame. Online stores offer a greater variety.

heh, thanks!
well, with my Mello wig, its all flippy and all when I took it out of the packaging, so how do I get is straight?

Use hot water over it first - brush it flat and let air dry. If that doesn't help do step 2 in my tutorial and use a flat iron. I've heard of people using a clothes iron but I haven't tried that yet - same principle though.

when I brush it out, it doesnt matter if I use a brush or some, right?

Use a comb first to straighten it out, then gently brush it to smooth the fibers

Heh, thanks Bert, but there's still a lot I need to learn.
In fact I wanted to enroll in a cosmetology course until I learned that all they do is give you a foam wig form, a practice wig, and make you buy your scissors and styling tools. No lessons, nothing. All the focus is going to makeup and nail art.

bbqbert In reply to Stealthos-Aurion [2008-03-18 20:32:31 +0000 UTC]
Seriously? That doesn't sound like much of a cosmetology school. I know a lot of people going to school for that, but the main focus is definitely hair styling, cutting, and design. In fact, I don't even know if they focus on makeup and the like at all--if they did, they don't use it at all today!!

Oh, this is the local BOCES school which teaches high school students a trade. They have adult education classes but for $1500 I didn't think it'd cover anything I wanted to know. Furthermore, since it is just a hobby I don't want to have to go back to school full time. I've got enough student loans for a lifetime. Such a shame.

Ooooo brakein' th' rulez!!! for shame.
lol j/k I think anyone who styles wigs alot throws those sukers to the side.
I take blowdryers and crap to my wigs all the time.

Mos def. Rules like those need to be broken if you're a DIY person. I just figured I'd do some damage control because undoubtedly someone will try this and complain to me that they ruined their curling irons etc.
I haven't tried using an clothes iron on a wig yet, I've heard it can be done by sandwiching the hair in wax paper and going to town.

lol sounds like a sure fire way to have a blob of plastic attached to a mesh cap.
well I guess if you had one of them new fangeld irons with all the diffrent settings, like more then them dog-go com-puters or whatever...
lol

Yea, it does sound sketchy but I need to get a better iron anyway. If this messes my iron up, I won't cry over it. heheh
