Description and I did some commenting on a stock image of mine at [link] and he mentioned height maps in MDB and if I had used the stock on one. Height maps was a new term on me but I knew the image he mentined of called Overzealous Watermark at [link]

I have done a bit of tweeking to his parameters, but I wanted to see how the map would look following on from the discussion with Fraterchaos. This image actually uses a slightly closer version of the carved door, but not much different from the stock image.

Would like to hear what people think. Thanks for any favs/comments. View LARGE for best detail, also I think there is a bit of the map that looks like a dogs face (or just my wild imagination ) so play spot the dog

Parameters are:

I don`t get it with these height maps.
Does it only change the way a colormap is projected on the object or does it create /shape an object?

When I load the params I get the same image .Without the dog-texture of course.
If I choose a map and put the maps nr. into the formula , the image does not change.
Changing formula settings creates changes but the same as without using another map or not a map at all (map not found) .

Only when I make a hybrid of heightmap and an escapetime it shows the effect.

I didn't use the numbers in the height map as I could not get it to work. Since this Tobaal has given me a pointer on how to use the height map, so I have another experiment to do, tobaal's image at [link] uses the formula map setting. I have only been using MDB over the last three months so am only now trying to get my head round height maps and what they can do. Sorry I can't be any more help at present

Escapement time?

Escapetime is a class of fractals.
IFS are another class.
there are also Quaternions , Flames ,etc.

OK, thanks for that info . I'll be putting up a height map experiment shortly with a few questions, as I can't find a tut to explain the settings on them Hopefully some one on DA will know

I already did test it.
It's amazing how the heights change when another map is chosen.

I'll have to dig into the params later but at first glance it seems to work great on a smooth form. What happens when you map this on to highly 'bumpy' fractals? - Or have I missed the whole point - highly probable
And yes, dog face is staring at me. Reminds me of a Jim Woodring character.

Thanks for comment, as for a bumpy one see [link]

Had to look Jim Woodring up

Taojoe In reply to stebev [2012-08-10 18:38:38 +0000 UTC]

OK - the Aged Carving link image works but definitively loses the map's content - more like just the tone of the map is retained. In some ways it turns the Mandelbulb software into a limited ray tracing app. Limited in that one can't design specific forms to render just the resultant fractals.
I admire your trying to push what the software can do though - something marvelous is sure to come from it.
Woodring is awfully out-there & surreal but I love his work.

Thanks Taojoe, You can certainly get a feel of the map better with the latest image, but as you say sometimes maps can help with colouring/tone.

My pushing the software is more I haven't got a clue what something will do so give it a try methodology but I'm sometimes pleased with the results

You never know until you try - and sometimes it's magic. That's how I've learned 99% of what digital things can do - just keep trying every menu option
I still have a lot of options to check-off in Mandelbulb - I have seriously neglected the post-processing tab.

Fractals is fun - Ever Inward!
