Alex glares up at the lid from the tiny bit of light coming through the crack, and then stands up and rests her hands and shoulders on the lid

"I said... GET OFF!!" She shouted and tried lifting the lid...

*Several hours later, I wake up and she is awkwardly silent. I take a chance and lift the lid to notice she has tired out, and fallen asleep unintentionally. Then I play around with bits of junk. I find an old blender, remove the jug off it, then tie pieces of feathers toΒ the spinnerΒ and switch it on.* "It works!" *I pull her shoes off, have the broken blender with feathers tickle her feet, then I quickly shut the lid and lie on top of the bin again.* "Hehehe... she'll never forgive me for that."

lol I know I'm weird but I do this. you can get some great stuff in there. Especially around college. People throw away all sorts of perfectly useable stuff. But if it rains I don't do it. It smells then and almost everything is ruined. But its a good way of getting used textbooks and then selling back and making pure profit.

Used text books? people throw 'em away? are they CRAZY? my bro says they're crazy expencive!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ilrb700 In reply to StefanPWinc [2012-09-12 02:42:33 +0000 UTC]

Yes, yes, they are crazy, but when parents buy the books for them, they don't understand their value. That's why it's important for kids to earn what they want when growing up and not just get everything handed to them. Then they'll appreciate the value of a dollar. And you're brother is right they can be crazy expensive! oh and thanks for the compliment

Hey, I've dumpster-dived before. I'd never do domestic or restaurant bins, because they are stinky and insanitary - but shop bins generally aren't, and that's where you get all the good stuff anyway. Supermarkets throw out loads of perfectly fine food, still wrapped in waterproof, airtight packaging, every night. Better to go in the colder months, or try to go the night after the bin's been emptied. I wouldn't advise actually climbing inside the bin, though - there are a lot of ways that can go badly wrong. Haven't done it in a while, but only because, in the last few places I've lived, I haven't been able to find supermarkets with accessible bins.

My daughter and I are building a go-kart using materials found on Freecycle or lifted from the local dump, though. Fun!

StefanPWinc In reply to TalkyMeat [2012-08-26 15:18:38 +0000 UTC]

(I know this, and alex knows this, in reality if she where to dumpster dive, THAT'S how she'd do it, or go to the dump, not climb inside... but I wanted to make it a bit silly and cartoony

Funny you mentioned that... I envisioned Alex doing the same thing with her brother )

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TalkyMeat In reply to StefanPWinc [2012-08-26 17:08:28 +0000 UTC]

…of course, that's not to say that I never climbed inside a dumpster - if there's a load of perfectly edible lamb chops in undamaged packaging just out of reach, I'm not gonna walk away from that but … yeah, scary.

The half-made go-kart is in my mum's garden shed, so next time we visit grandma, we'll finish building it, and I'll post pics on my journal - including pics of any injuries sustained test-driving it!

PS - your turn! - [link]

Alex: Right, of course if there's something like that you gotta climb in... and I'll totally eat meat if it'll just be thrown away ^^

TalkyMeat In reply to StefanPWinc [2012-08-26 18:45:44 +0000 UTC]

Me: Absolutely! It helps if you've got someone who knows where you are, of course, and when to expect you back.

My best haul ever was twenty frozen turkeys. They were starting to thaw, so my ex and I spend the next couple of days making jerky YUM!

Actually, no, that was the second best - the best was a dozen boxes of truffles in the Thornton's bins. A few were given to relatives that Christmas - they were not told where they came from, though

Alex: Woah *eyes grow wide with admiration* you weren't kidding! you really ARE good at it ^^
Twenty... woah... that's like... enough to feed yah for 3 months or something

TalkyMeat In reply to StefanPWinc [2012-08-26 20:08:09 +0000 UTC]

Me: I don't think I was that skilful - I was just fortunate to live near a very wasteful Sainsbury's that didn't put a lock on their bins - an I was able to go out at 3am to take advantage of it. We were absolutely broke at the time, with a new baby, but thanks to dumpster diving, we managed to eat really well.

Now my daughter is older, she's asked me to show her how to dumpster-dive too. Haven't yet found any supermarkets with accessible bins in our area - though we have checked some out

StefanPWinc In reply to TalkyMeat [2012-08-26 20:10:35 +0000 UTC]

Alex: She ASKED YOU? I really gotta meet her sometime
I know some! if you two ever come and visit my farm, there's one in a town nearby that often has awesome hauls

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TalkyMeat In reply to StefanPWinc [2012-08-26 22:21:46 +0000 UTC]

Me: Yeah - we were shopping two nights before Christmas, and there was a ton of stuff marked down, 'cause the shop was going to be closed for three days, but the markdown was crap, and they said they weren't going to give it a second sticker, so we got on our bikes and had a look round the back. All the bins were fenced off in a locked compound, so, no luck there. You'll have to show us, if we're ever travelling your way!
