Her mind wandered aimlessly, flashing before her eyes were random memories, both recent and long ago. She saw the alpha’s pale blue eyes, cold as ice, freezing her in place. It was those eyes that filled her with mountains of emotions, pretty much all of them negative, fear being the greatest.

The face of a snarling packmate flashed before her eyes, then she saw her sister, gazing at her sympathetically, her mother watching worriedly, unsurely as she took another beating from the alpha. A time when she was a pup being snarled at by bigger, older wolves was recalled.

She had passed out… but when? And how long ago? She wasn’t sure. All she knew was that she wanted to just stay still and rest. All she knew was that her limbs felt heavy with exhaustion.

A cry escaped her lips as she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her paw, the pad of her left forepaw, to be exact. She gritted her teeth. What was going on?

“It’ll be alright. It’s going to be alright. Take it easy.”

What she heard surprised her. It was a young male’s voice, soft, gentle and soothing- nothing like what she was used to hearing. Another thing that she found ultimately surprising was the rhythmic, calming strokes of a damp tongue against her cheek. ‘What in the name of winter and shadows is happening?’ She wondered, ‘Wouldn’t the Alpha be driving this male away from me or something?’

“Calm down, we’re trying to help you. Just take it easy.”

There was something about the male’s voice and calming licking that made her want to do as he said. The she-wolf relaxed the muscles she had unconsciously tensed.

“There, that’s good,” the wolf’s voice reassured her, “Just take it easy, Frost.”

Frost? Why was he calling her that? It was usually only her sister who called her that. Her sister had said something along the lines of ‘Frostbite… that’s such a cruel name! Frost is much better, y’know!’

Her curiosity growing, she made herself more aware of her surroundings, focusing her attention on what she could hear, smell and feel, deciding to open her eyes later incase all she’d see would be the bright sun’s light.

Aside from the usual pains of the multiple wounds and scars of her body, she felt newer, more recent aches on her right hindleg and the pad of her left forepaw. The scents around her seemed different, not the scents of her pack and territory, and there were a pair of wolves she didn’t know close to her. One of the wolves was a young male while the other was an old female. Beneath her was soft grass and soil, not the rocky earth of her small, cramped den. Where was she?

“Yaaaw!” She cried out again as she felt the pain in her pad once more. This time she opened her eyes, lifted her head and snapped her jaws in the direction whatever was harming her would be. She did this in one quick, fluid motion.

Her teeth caught nothing, and it was only after she realized what she had done that the she-wolf recoiled, whimpering wordlessly, expecting to get punished by the wolves there.

From what she could see with the blurred vision she had been born with, the brown and grey wolf near her head showed no aggression at all while the pale grey she-wolf that seemed to be doing something with her paw seemed annoyed.

“She looks scared half to death!” Frostbite found herself feeling shocked. Was that concern other than surprise that she detected in the male’s voice?

“What do you expect? From the looks of her, Wintershadow’s been treating her poorly all her life. And we all know how heartless that pack of brutes can be.” The tone of the old she-wolf’s voice was matter-of-fact. Then her tone took on the edge of a firm order. “Hold her down so I can finally get that thorn out of her paw.”

“Is that necessary?” The male’s tone was reluctant as he drew closer to her.

Frostbite shut her eyes, expecting to feel his teeth digging into some part of her to hold her down. She opened her eyes again when instead of teeth, she felt the wolf placing his paws and chest on top of her side. She turned her head to face him, confusion in her eyes. The albino she-wolf decided against asking any questions.

“We just want to get a thorn out of your paw. Keep still so Thina can attend to it as quickly as possible.” He told her.

With a nod, she placed her head back on the ground. Frostbite gritted her teeth as she felt the she-wolf called Thina tug at the thorn.

A sigh of relief left her lips as the thorn finally came out. “Thank you…” Her voice was soft, barely above a whisper, and sounded unused.

She wasn’t sure, but judging by the movement, it seemed Thina gave a small nod. “You’re welcome, young’un.”

The albino she-wolf was about to lift her head and lick her pad, but before she could, the brown and grey male moved off of her and began licking her pad. “Get some rest,” he told her. “Relax.”

“While you fuss over her like an old mother, I’m going to go back to my den to take a nap.”

Deciding to finally give in to the exhaustion the pain always gave her, Frostbite closed her eyes with a sigh. “Thanks…”

“You’re welcome, Frost.”

Frost… she had always preferred that to her full name. It felt good to hear this wolf her age calling her by that name. He probably heard someone like her sister call her Frost… This satisfied feeling was what she felt shortly before Frostbite slipped into a strange, half-asleep state. She recalled experiences in her life, while being half-aware of the male’s tongue licking her wounds.

“Damn it! What’s wrong with her? Why in the name of winter and shadow is she like that? That is no daughter of mine! She’s practically blind under the sun! And even at night she still has poor eyesight. And what kind of strange being looks like that? With eyes, nose and pads like that? It’s unnatural! I refuse to accept that thing is my daughter!”

It was on one night, when they were still young pups, that she and her sister were listening to their father as he ranted, snarling out his anger and frustration at their mother, who remained silent the whole time. Frost had felt her eyes watering as she heard her father saying this.

“H-he’s right…”

“No! He’s not! You’re not what he says you are.” Her sibling gave her cheek several reassuring licks. “Don’t believe the trash dad’s saying.”

“Y-you’re right...” She lifted her head. “I’m a wolf just like all of you. Whatever dad says can’t change that.”

Then she was shown another memory, one that took place when she was slightly older than a little pup, of her lying in the small den infront of the Alpha’s. They had made her stay there so it would be easy for the Alpha to find her if ever he needed to take his anger out on her. Half her right ear had been ripped right off and was bleeding.

“Frost?” came her sister’s voice from the den entrance.

She lifted her head almost as high as the ceiling of her den, which wasn’t exactly high. “Come to take your anger out on Wintershadow’s Omega, right?” She growled irritably. “Leave me alone!”

“What’s going on?” asked a male wolf, one she assumed had been trying to impress her sister recently, “Omega won’t come out? Want me to yank her out for you?”

“Buzz off, you conceited son of a bison!” Frostbite felt warm affection and pride in her sister as she snarled at the wolf.

Frostbite tensed, letting out a whimper through gritted teeth as she felt the male’s tongue going over a large, gaping wound on her back.

“Sorry, sorry about that, Frost,” He sounded genuinely apologetic as the strokes of his tongue on her wound grew even gentler.

The albino she-wolf relaxed, but the memory that played before her made her mind feel anything but relaxed.

At a time when she was a little bit older, the Alpha and a hunting patrol were returning empty-pawed and hungry. Frustrated and enraged at the loss of a good meal, the alpha stiffly approached her, hackles raised, teeth bared.

Knowing the worst could happen, the she-wolf nudged away the pups who wanted to play with her. “We’ll play later, okay?” she whispered before lowering her body so her belly touched the grass. Tail tucked between her legs, she crawled toward the alpha.

He began snarling, pacing back and forth in front of her, “That hunt was a failure! Our pack’s going to be hungry! And you! You couldn’t help because of your blindness! What’s worse, all you can ever do is be a burden to our pack!”

“A-alpha…” Frost didn’t let her voice get any louder than a whisper, too afraid of continuing. She looked up at him. Just as she did, the sun shone in her eyes, keeping her from seeing her alpha, or anything else for that matter.

The she-wolf lowered her gaze back to the ground, blinking as she tried to see. This was something that happened to her often, which was why she preferred staying in the dark whenever the sun was high.

As she fought to see with her usual vision, she was caught by surprise by the unexpected feeling of teeth digging into her back.

“Take it easy, calm down,” she felt the male alternately licking and nuzzling her cheek in an effort to calm her. “Forget about that dream…”

She recalled a more recent event. Frost was sleeping in her den, practically the only thing she could do there. She awoke to the feeling of teeth gripping her hindleg as she was forcibly pulled out of her den.

Unable to see in the sudden bright light of the sun, she was prone to more attacks from the Alpha. This would have happened if it weren’t for the unexpected commotion. Frostbite was never really sure of whatever was happening but she knew a fight had broken out in their territory.

The albino remembered feeling her sister nudging her to her feet. She had struggled to stand on three legs, unable to put weight on the leg the alpha had given deep marks from his teeth on.

“C’mon,” her sister had whispered into her ear, allowing Frostbite to lean on her as she led the albino out of the camp. “With all the confusion, now would be the best time for you to escape.”

Frostbite’s sister had often told her she would one day escape; this had always given Frost hope. But now, instead of hope and joy, she felt fear. “Are you sure? Alpha will kill us… kill me if he found out.”

“I won’t let him.” Her sister replied grimly.

For Frost, the walk had felt long and hard, she was constantly tripping on tree roots and her unruly pelt got caught in the branches of shrubs twice. Also, she had never really left the camp, barely getting far from her den even. This was the longest distance she had ever gone.

She was panting and barely able to stand, her sister practically carrying her already when the scent of the intruding wolves reached her pink nose.

Frost had felt the pelt of her sister next to her beginning to bristle.

The scent of meat flooded into her nostrils, causing her to open her eyes. Was that what she thought it was? Frostbite squinted, trying to see for sure if it was what she thought it was.

“Go ahead and eat it. Not like its poisoned or anything.”

The albino turned to look at the male curiously. Why was he being so hospitable? First being so gentle and nice, next cleaning her wounds, and now the rib of a freshly killed deer?

Then she remembered another thing. Those weren’t the only things he did for her! When the wolves surrounded her and her sister, she didn’t remember how anymore, but Frost remembered convincing the wolves to take her and keep her as their prisoner and let her sister go. She had struggled to follow them to their territory before collapsing. He carried her!

“So do you have any plans of eating that?” his words snapped her out of her thoughts. “It’s bad enough Beta Flamerock thought it would be a waste to give you food.”

Frostbite nudged the rib toward him as she moved so she lay on her stomach instead of her side. “I wouldn’t want to cause any trouble…”

Were her eyes getting worse or did the wolf grin? “It’s alright, ‘twas no trouble at all. I’ve been wanting a chance to do something that brat Beta Flamerock didn’t want.” He paused, “Though if it wasn’t for the alpha… I probably wouldn’t even be allowed here with you… feeding you and stuff…”

It was then that Frostbite took a liking to the young wolf. “What’s your name?” she asked, tilting her head.

“Fidelis.”

“Nice name…” she muttered, only half wanting him to hear her. “Not like Frostbite…”

“Then we’ll call you Frost.”

He had spoken so simply and surely, Frostbite had no idea what to say. Instead, she decided focus all her attention on the food, knowing that for now, she wouldn’t have to worry about her alpha’s next fit of rage.

As she took her first bite, she couldn’t help but wonder… what would happen next? Would they press her for pack secrets? What could she tell them if they did? Half the time she was just trapped in her den. Would they make her their new omega? For some reason, somehow, Frostbite felt it in her guts that Fidelis wouldn’t let them.

As she ripped off another chunk of meat, she also realized that at last she had one other friend to count on other than her sister, one she would need now more than ever in this strange, new territory.

Without knowing or being able to explain why, she knew that though she would probably face troubles in this pack, it would be better than her life in her previous pack.
