the ages for the cmc's are about 8-10
the ages for the mane 6 are about 15-17
since you find out your talent around 7-11 in equestria, you can live on your own and get a job at the mane 6's age range
rarity and cheerilee were in the same class in ponyville, putting them at the same age range as the cmc's had at the time
this means if one were to put big mac and fancy pants at the same age range, and rarity and cheerilee are about the same age, rarity and fancy pants could work
now, you are taking ages using EQG
highschools take kids at 14
the cmc's are in the highschool, but are not close to that age
also cheerilee is a teacher while the mane 6 are students, but are the same age on Equus
