it just wont allow. i tried to colour it, and the whole thing just went that one colour, and that layer was above the background one so i did colour the picture layer, but thats just what happened

That's weird. You didn't accidently change the settings of the tools, did you?
What exactly did you try? Color it with the bucket? Theres an option to choose all the layers for coloring or just the active one. Of you choose the active only, of course all the image would be colored... If this is not the problem, I think I don't know anything else, too.
Oh, btw, you might save your final images as png, a transparent background would look much better than the white surface

now when i try it, i paste it to a file and it just pastes a black shape... i dont understand why its doing this now...
and i know, but when i did that was when i had an old version of illustrator, and that would only save as jpg.
