Description The valknut, valknutr, valknot, or "knot of the slain," is an ancient Scandinavian symbol devoted to Odin.

For this drawing, in addition to shading each triangle to distinguish them from each other, I drew various phrases in runes. They're transliterated English, so they're hardly authentic, but they still look decent.

They are:

"In Odin's name,
In Odin's time.

"I hear the call,
I enter the hall.

"My choice is here,
my path is clear."

"Urdh, Skuld, Verthandi."

That last phrase is simply the names of the Norns, who govern Wyrd and Orlog.

BTW, just so's you know, people who wear this symbol generally do so to let Odin know that he can take them at any time.

If you truly don't have a problem with that, here's the image available on a t-shirt: www.zazzle.com/runic_valknut_t…

***EDIT ADDED 04/17/14 - Due to overwhelming requests, I hereby give permission to all who request it to use this image SOLELY for the purpose of getting a tattoo. All I ask in return is that you take a photo of the finished tatt and e-mail it to stephen.bergstrom@att.net. ***

Great drawing!

Did you know ?

TheΒ ValknutΒ is one of the most famous and popularΒ Viking symbols. Also known as Odin’s knot, Hrungnir’s heart, the knot of the slain warrior and the Heart of Vala, the Valknut is considered as the symbol of Odin.

This symbol found on old Norse stone carvings and funerary stelΓ©sΒ is sometimes called β€œHrungnir’s heart,” after the legendary giant of theΒ Eddas. This emblem is also found in art depicting the GodΒ Odin, where it may represent the god's power over death. Some versions of the valknut can be drawn in some strokes, making it a popular talisman of protection.

Where it says I hear the call that's the symbol for K where it says Call so it would be Kall?

It phoenetic. There is no "C" rune as pertains to English. There's Sowilo for the "S" sound, and and Kenaz for the hard "K" sound.

Ah from what I've seen there is a rune for C or maybe that was just some people trying to complete the alphabet but thanks for the insight.

No prob. The Elder Futhark has but 24 runes. There have been other sets over the years, but this is the one I connect with the most.
There are no runes that transliterate to "C," "Q," "V," or "Z." There are two runes, however, that represent double-letter combos. Thurisaz is "TH", and Ingwaz is "NG."

Hope that helps.

Yeah I know about the NG and TH runes I was just going off what Ive seen in pictures like img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20…

If I'm remembering correctly, that particular chart was for a video game that contained a form of runes for the player to solve. It borrowed quite a few from the Elder Futhark, but just flat-out made up the others.

Runes have a long and interesting history, and there are lots of books on the subject.

Yeah I know Ive actually been trying to find any books to do with runes I wanted to learn more about them because I found out I come from European roots and was invited by odinist and by friends of mine who study asatru only problem is I live in australia so finding any thing to do with asatru is proving difficult.

Love the inscription on it. ^_^
A lot of runes I see in art don't say anything and are just the alphabet or somthing, it always disappoints me slightly.

I live and work with the runes, so I totally understand. I see those pieces out there, and it just frustrates the heck out of me.
It's like walking into a Greek temple and the inscription above reading "ABCDEFGHIJK..."

I kind of accidentally learn the elder futhark 7 years ago, I swear its not that hard to translate something that says something. But no its always F U TH A R K. *Sigh*

I was wondering if I could get this embroidered on the back of a sweatshirt. I could incorporate your name into it if you wish. If not I'll just use a generic valknut. Yours was too awesome so I had to ask.

Where are you stationed? I'm in San Diego, sort of close to MCAS Miramar and within driving distance to Camp Pendleton.

oh im overseas. im stationed in okinawa japan. but i was hoping that anthony richard surprenant could be translated and placed inside the valknut where Urdh, Skuld, and Verthandi are placed. next pay i could buy some points on here and give ya some as a way of saying thank you if you could draw one up with my name inside it. but theres no hurry i got 2 weeks till pay day so take your time if your willing to draw it up. i would be most thankful and reguardless of anything i am gonna tell some of my marine buddies about this site and bout how good your drawings are. thanks and have a good day
