Description

My custom Funko Pops of the Jervis Tetch Mad Hatter, the Scarecrow and the Riddler. Burtonverse, Tim Burton gave me the ideas to do this.

My Jervis Tetch Mad Hatter custom is a combination of the head from the American Horror Story Freak Show Pepper Pop! The hat from the Alice Through the Looking Glass Mad Hatter Pop! And the body from the Bob's Big Boy Pop! And I painted a green coat on it with green paint.

My Scarecrow custom is a combination of the head from the Friday the 13th Jason Voorhees special edition Pop! The hat from the Kung Fu Panda Po [with Hat] Pop! The body from Nightmare Before Christmas Pumpkin King Pop! And I painted eyes on it with black paint and a nose and a stitched mouth.

My Riddler custom is a combination of the head from the Billy Madison Danny McGrath Pop! The body from the Batman Classic TV Series Riddler Pop! And I added a Star Wars Yoda (1980) coat by Kenner that I found on ebay that I dyed green.

Of course Tim Burton would have made the Jervis Tetch Hatter for his Batman franchise at Warners differentiated from the Johnny Depp Tarrant Hightopp Hatter for his Alice in Wonderland franchise at Disney. I see Martin Short as who Tim Burton would have cast for the Jervis Tetch Hatter if Warners co-chairman Bob Daly hadn't decided Tim Burton was too dark for Batman and too scary for kids and gave the Bat franchise to Joel Schumacher. Burton did have Martin Short in Mars Attacks and Frankenweenie. In the comics and Batman: Animated Series the Jervis Tetch Hatter had the big-toothed overbite and big nose macrocephaly features of a "pinhead." I see Tim Burton as going in that deformed freak direction for Jervis Tetch Hatter, similar to the Danny DeVito Penguin.

I based the Scarecrow one on Tim Burton's design..

Tim Burton wanted Brad Dourif as Scarecrow for the third Burtonverse Batman film in 1993 that Burton wanted to be set at Hallowe'en, but Warners co-chairman Bob Daly had decided Tim Burton was too dark for Batman and too scary for kids and gave the Bat franchise to Joel Schumacher. Brad Dourif explained, "Y'know, I've heard that! One time I saw Tim Burton on an airplane and he was looking at me very interestedly. But I never spoke to him about it, and I think I wouldn't have been big enough a star for anyone to cast me in that role. He might've been interested, but I doubt the powers that be would've let him do it."

That Riddler is Steve Buscemi! I see him as who Tim Burton really would have cast for the Riddler after I found out Robin Williams had turned the Riddler role down in 1994, then Schumacher cast Jim Carrey. On January 2nd 1994 Des O'Connor asked Robin Williams, "You've got the Riddler coming up?" Robin Williams said, "Maybe. Yeah, if the script is good I'll do that."

Entertainment Weekly reported in 1994: "Holy casting coups! Super-hot Jim Carrey — and not Robin Williams — will play the Riddler in Batman Forever, scheduled for release in 1995. While both the studio and Carrey are declining comment, a source says it took just 30 minutes of negotiation to cast Carrey, who’ll earn $5 million and the chance to show his face to an international audience. But why did Williams forfeit the role? The comedian had no comment, but an insider says, 'He believed the character was too intellectual and not as comedic as the Riddler played by Frank Gorshin on the TV series.' Williams was reportedly also concerned that his Riddler would be overshadowed by the film’s other Bat-foe, Harvey (Two-Face) Dent, especially after Tommy Lee Jones was cast in the role."

Burton did have Buscemi in Big Fish. Buscemi would fit in Burton's blend of quirky humor and macabre weirdos better than sweet, silly and lovable Robin Williams anyway. Honestly I didn't really find Robin Williams believable as a bad guy in One Hour Photo and Insomnia, I didn't find Jim Carrey believable as a bad guy in Batman Forever, Grinch, Lemony Snicket and Sonic, but I find Buscemi totally believable as a bad guy in Fargo and Boardwalk Empire, etc.
In the Big Fish commentary Tim Burton said about Steve Buscemi, "He's a guy that just, anytime I see him in a film it just makes me happy, he's just such a great presence and I always wanted to work with him and because I love people that look like they could be in a silent movie. He's one of those guys that just expresses so much without even having to say anything. I love Steve's character, too. He's another that I related to. This guy that is artistic... I just love this character, going from a poet to a bank robber, and then becoming very successful, I always felt very close to this character in a weird way... This kind of Don Knotts gone bad, kind of like if Barney Fife had got on the wrong side of the law type of a situation. Steve [Buscemi is] excellent at improve and again getting kind of a funny tone because when Steve [Buscemi] comes out of there it's actually kind of scary because you don't know if he's gonna shot somebody, get that mixture of comedy and slightly scary at the same time. I would love him [Steve Buscemi] to be [in all of my movies]."
