Description
Remembering.Summer
July draped like a thick blanket over the neighborhood
Remembering.
Your bedroom
Dark
Except for the steady stream of dusty yellowness from the light in the hall
Long shadows of the things in your room
Remembering.
The edge of your bed
I sat,
Paying special attention to a ripped seam in the quilt
Memorizing its pattern
Remembering.
Your words
The way they bruised at first
Purply black and cold
Making a nest in my stomach
And then turned red and hot and burning
They flew out of your mouth like sparks and burrowed into my flesh
Remembering.
A solitary tear
Single and salty and sliding
Down my cheek and onto my chin
Where it rested, and then fell
Creating a dark spot on the blue fabric of my jeans
Remembering.
The deep green of guilt
Only a mist in the beginning
Suddenly drenching me in its lukewarm nausea
And wondering if it would ever leave
And then-
Remembering.
The brilliant pink and yellow and blue
Of the promise of tomorrow.
