Oh wow, I had no idea you worked on the movie. I watched it last week and I'm still digesting it all. Can't wait to read your blog post (though I couldn't help spoiling myself by looking at all the images...). This is the kind of breakdown I was hoping for in the "Art of..." book. I love those kinds of books, but they do tend to breeze through all the elements of a movie without stopping to give much detail or explain why things ended up looking how they looked.

The "Art of" book is nice, but it definitely is missing a lot of stuff (I'm sure sure it's difficult to edit something like that). You're right, they usually just give a partial overview, and don't often go in-depth. But still, it's a nice volume.
I put stuff on my blog that I felt represented the process of designing the ship up to the point that I took it. I also wanted to acknowledge some of the other artists involved in the project. There was a LOT of work that went into it.

It came, it landed, takes off then exploded..
Ahh so your the one who design it, AWESOME!!
Prometheus is a disappointment though, it lacks some important elements that ALIEN had, which is supprizes, fear & eroticism.

I read your blogspot on this and it did cover a number of questions - i.e. how much input did you have, what was the brief...
Interesting is how you did a wee sketch and then it all sort of started to come to pass. Must admit I liked the second pic because it lookes so "Norstromo". Also love those tiny details in the windows - gave me tingles.
So two years eh? F*** me!
Its interesting about all the other factors involved in this ship coming to pass - well done mate! I like these type of stories - shows more to the efforts.
I planned to do my version of Prometheus, but I dunno....
Thanks for sharing this and a great piece of info.
Must have been shitting bricks when Mr Scott reviewed your work - the story of him and Martin Bower resonates with me...

It would have been interesting to see what would have come from pursuing one of the other sketches - the "Nostromo" one you like is also one I might have been inclined to follow.
Ridley Scott was actually very pleasant to work with. He would come in and sketch things, and had a lot of great ideas. It was a good experience.

Steve, I saw Prometheus just last night.
Amazing picture, great story and building upon a great background setting.
I was wondering who designed the Prometheus and it was you!
Great stuff, it was a real star of the show for me. What a project to be
involved in. You did it so well!

Well, I got the ball rolling at least. The final version was developed by Ben Procter, who started where I left off and took it to the next stage. Then the artists at MPC took it into the stratosphere in terms of detailing.
Films are collaborative - I'm happy to have been able to contribute to something like this, it's a rare opportunity

Its great that you were able to be a part of it.
A deserving team member methinks.
I can definitely see your base design in the final design for the movie.
Thanks for helping to make it well worth watching!

Nice one Steve, this looks like the hawkish cousin to the original Nostromo, they sure kept a LOT of your lines for the finished deal,
so was there any discussion on wormhole travel, or am I totally imagining it?

steve-burg In reply to m0zch0ps [2012-06-13 05:23:11 +0000 UTC]
It was supposed to be a more advanced craft than the Nostromo, even though this story occurs decades before the events in "Alien". So it's sleeker and built for speed. The final ship is a little less sleek than mine was, although it has the same overall silhouette and the engines reorient for landing very much as they did in the first version.
There wasn't any talk of wormhole travel. It's kind of vague exactly how the ship crosses interstellar distances, but the voyage is supposed to take several years. It is somewhat fanciful in terms of interstellar travel - but I guess the main focus is on what happens once the ship arrives at its destination

Man this stuff is just so cool. I love all of the art you have on your blog, it brings forth such a wicked imagination. Well done, bravo, and kudos to you Now when I watch the film, I'll be saying "That's Steve's work right there!"

Thanks! The movie shows the work of a number of really great artists - and it's all put together by a master film director (Ridley Scott) - so it's an honor to contribute to something like that

Excellent! What else can I possibly add? The lift module all-in-one really gives scale to this novel craft.

steve-burg In reply to karanua [2012-06-13 05:28:52 +0000 UTC]
Thanks - I'm glad you like it! The engines reorienting was kind of born of necessity, since what looked impressive sitting on the ground just wouldn't look right in-flight. It turned out to be kind of a signature aspect of the ship - so it's interesting how sometimes things emerge from trying to solve a problem like that

I wondered if you were involved in this movie, somehow the shape of the ship's nose and heavy proportions had your style to them. Wonderful design with the landing feet built into the engines, leaves more space in the main hull for the crew. Were you able to dabble at all in other areas of human tech as in the interior or vehicles?

I did a pass on the interiors, but I didn't do any work on the ground vehicles.

It's best viewed as an original science fiction movie - as opposed to a rigorous setup for the "Alien" franchise
