HEY!
If you're one of the guys who was responsible for the visual effects, then I would
like to say this: Good job.
I watched the movie today and I must say, Prometheus had by far one of the best
visual effects I have ever seen in cinema history (at least when it comes to CGI and
overall set design). It was great to see a classic science fiction movie again with aliens,
space and a future setting and also explaining the origin story of the Alien mythology.
Also props on the guys responsible for the soundtrack. Really wonderful set of
orchestra which gave lots of depth towards the movie. Criticism however goes towards
the story, which could have gone more into details and the characters, which at times
seemed to be a rag tag band of stereotypes. Overall a good movie, not the best but
I enjoyed it.
Also the ship is absolutely amazing. Great job!

I do like the ship , she is indeed sexy .
This is taken from Weyland Industries
( Dual FTL engines are driven by a 2.1 terrawatt RL fusion reactor. The ability to provide molecularly stable transport for ship components and human crew over light-years of space gives Weyland explorers, scientists and planetary engineers access to regions never before imagined. )
So there is nothing classified , I mean there is no other drive on her but , those, four Nuclear powered ION plasma engines .

I am having a little hard time to jolt , the ship , into FTL . 2.1 terrawatt , a spring day medium lightning kind of power and successful controlled fusion ... PUSH FORCE is BAAM FTL . I would have love to hear things like Quantum sequencer , like Sendercorps ACU unit ATOM CHILL unit , when heat reaches billion plus happy KELVINS , magnetic force would not suffer .

Okay NEVER THE LESS . I am honored ,just to be able to write ,to someone , who did some fine work that will be a GrandMARK in history .

As a kid, I used to draw spacecraft. When I got older I tried to make them as real world as possible: And compared to yours, they are nothing but scrawls on paper... The movie wasn't as hot as it was hoped to be, but I hope somebody markets the ship from the movie... Even if it was only six inches long it would still be impressive.

Thanks very much! I've always liked spaceship designs that have not only an interesting shape, but a level of functional logic to give meaning to that shape. Not everyone would agree with me, but for my money I've always liked designs that at least give the appearance that they could maybe somehow work

I was wondering whose brain this design had come out of. That's so cool it was you. Beautiful shapes, gorgeous ship, and it plugs into the Ron Cobb shapes of the first one really nicely.

How long did it take you to build the raw 3D-Concept you mention on your blog? I am trying to learn 3D-Modelling and texturing to create the CGI-Scenes for my own little film, but progress is slow...

Scifiwarships [2012-06-21 06:44:59 +0000 UTC]

Awesome design! I just saw the film yesterday and was quite blown away. I like your version better though, because in the film it was lit up like Times square at some point which I thought was a bit much. I've read some of the thread below and I'm curious to know why it will be unstable with four engines instead of two? Is there some unsurmountable never changing law of physics that dictate this?
Also you and your work is a huge inspiration to me, thank you for posting here on DA.

steve-burg In reply to Scifiwarships [2012-06-21 16:36:42 +0000 UTC]

Actually, a VTOL using vectored thrust (as opposed to propellers) is unstable with anything less than 3 lift points. 4 lift points is quite stable.

A helicopter has a single lift point, but it is above the entire craft, so the fuselage "hangs" beneath the point of lift. With jet or rocket propulsion, however, the mass of the craft must be balanced above the point at which the thrust is generated. The easiest way to think of this is as though it is a chair, like a bar stool. Imagine sitting on a 2 legged stool, and you can see that a VTOL aircraft with only 2 lift points will need to constantly adjust itself in order not to go off-axis and crash.

Regardless of the number of lift points, a VTOL craft that transitions to vertical flight from forward flight is somewhat unstable while it is making the transition. That's why the V-22 Osprey and other aircraft that change to a VTOL mode are vulnerable to crashes while they're in the midst of reconfiguring their engines. I hope this helps!

I also worked on the HK designs for Terminator 2, and the flying HK has 2 engines. This always bothered me a bit, because I've always been a fan of real-world air and space vehicles. And then of course many other science fiction vehicles have adopted the 2 engines configuration. So I just wanted to propose a more realistic solution!

Scifiwarships In reply to steve-burg [2012-06-21 19:51:21 +0000 UTC]

Haha, my mistake! I misread the earlier thread entirely and thought 4 engines would be less stable than two though couldn't for the life of me figure out why, he he...
The Terminator hunter killer is a really serious piece of kit, as is the Starfury that you are famous for designing. Thank you for answering my questions, I'm a bit blown away here as you are one of my all time favourite designers.
Your worh is a huge inspiration to me, and I've used the Starfury as a benchmark of real world plausibility when I've been working on my own stuff. That is, I try to make it look as real as yours do, though I have a long way to go yet. Again thank you very very much for answering my questions, this means a lot.
I find this to be a really profound moment, as it turns out I've inadvertently followed your career for a large part of my adult life, and time and again drawn on your work for inspiration. It is the stuff that dreams are made of. Thank you.

It doesn't at all surprise me that it was you who designed the titular 'ship; and knowing it now, I see a lot of your style in the finished thing. I was glad some nice lingering shots of the 'ship made the final cut, and the design features (rotating engine pods and elevator-type garage) are really deserving of praise.

When you designed her, did you personally work out where everything would be inside, or was that the job of someone else?

steve-burg In reply to line-melte [2012-06-21 16:43:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your compliment!

I did not get as far as figuring out where the interiors fit into the ship, except at those points where they are clearly visible from outside - namely the cockpit and the "garage", which was more of a large elevator in the early stages.

The ship went through several stages in its development, separated by many months. I took it to this point (as seen) and then Ben Procter did the revisions and details that developed later in the production (the project had a bumpy ride while in the early phase, and was start & stop for quite a while. When it finally got going - the proverbial "green light" - I was committed to another job.)
