Description
This 3D illustration was produced for the book "Concept Design II" in about 2004 or so. It is the first in a series of related illustrations. The companion pieces are "Origin: Unkown" [link] "The Coming Storm" [link] and "Evacuate the Colony" [link]A group of ancient structures has just been discovered by a team of geologists stationed on an off-world mining facility. This remote and icy planet harbors no indigenous life, so the origin and purpose of these huge artifacts and their builders are a complete mystery.
In this view, the human explorers search for some way inside one of the artifacts. So far, they've had no luck
All the 3D elements were modeled and rendered in Lightwave 3D, with textures painted in Photoshop. The 3D render was retouched in Photoshop, to adjust the image contrast and retouch some small problem areas. The sky texture is a procedurally generated texture applied to a sky dome in the 3D scene.
This image is a variation and does not appear in the book - but I like it just the same. This is the first time it has been shown

Beautiful work - I really enjoy your storytelling which informs us of the dynamic conceptual interaction occurring in your mind as you work the image through the creative process. Top notch and commendable work. Art like this really provides a target to reach for, along with an imaginative journey - thanks for the excursion!

I read a lot of Sci-Fi because I love the images one's imagination comes up with when authors describe the environments. Sometimes I think it's too bad authors like Peter F. Hamilton aren't also artists. I can relate to your fascination with the ultra-futuristic Beautiful artwork!

It all tastes good until the alien baby bursts out of the gut or you develop an intense craving for Nsynch songs.
Well, its been good knowing you.
I remember seeing Alien in the movies and that scene where the guy goes to the cafeteria and
starts to writhe in pain and then the alien bursts out was pretty gross.

Wow, this is COOL! You know I'm a sucker for "monumental alien mystery" and this one really captures it well. The design of the structures remind me of a fusion of ancient Egypt and Cthulhu mythos. The vehicles are neat - a distant cousin of your "six-wheeled tongues"? The quality of ground cover and sleet deliver a great impression of and inhospitable environment.

It's no spot for a picnic, that's for sure. And the methane lake - it's no good for swimming
"...a fusion of ancient Egypt and Cthulhu mythos" - Dead-on target - bulls-eye
