Description
'Waiting Patiently' - 2013 - (Drawing)©2013 *Stevegillettart
Here is another completed drawing that I finished just before Christmas 2013. 'Waiting Patiently' was given to a work colleague of mine for a 'Secret Santa' gift, (Or in this case a NOT so Secret Santa gift). I stayed within the rules as the frame only cost me £5 UK Sterling and I mounted it and framed it myself. Hopefully my colleague liked it?
Please let me know what you think. Feel free to leave constructive criticism, comment or a critique.

That's very cute, I love the composition. Let's just hope your friend there loves cats... can you explain to me why you used embossing tools, if you don't mind my asking?

Sorry for the delay in replying.. Yes my friend who I gave this too absolutely loves cats.
Embossing tools.. My embossing tools are probably the best art investment I have made. I use the embossing tools to get the small white hairs/whiskers etc.. They are a fantastic art tool if you want to get very fine realistic hairs etc.
They are not too expensive. Mine are made by Derwent and I got them from eBay for around £3.50 UK Sterling (including delivery).
To use them I place some card under my paper and I then indent the paper using the embossing tool before I draw on it. Then once the dents are in the paper I then lightly shade over the top and the white lines stand right out. If I want grey lines then I would lightly shade the paper first and go through the same process of denting the paper. This time I would shade darker and this would then leave perfect grey hairs/whiskers.
They are very easy to use and the finish effect is amazing.. Believe it or not this would speed up the finished piece for me because before I had the to tools I would attempt to draw in as many hairs as possible (very time consuming and not as good finished product).
You can improvise if you can not get the tools and use something with a small blunt end.. Be careful you don't rip your paper when trying in dent the paper.
This technique is well worth practicing and perfecting because it makes such a big difference.
I hope this answers your question and feel free to ask any more.

It's fine, the delay in reply.
I'm so glad that you actually took the time to reply in full detail to my question! It means a lot when someone of professional talent such as yourself thoroughly explains their technique and helps out an inexperienced art student such as myself. I've never been exposed to embossing tools for pencil drawings!
And yes, they do not sound too expensive for me. They seem very reasonable considering you praise them so highly and suggest I use them. Considering my focus is largely on animals and humans, I feel like this tool will improve the fur/hair detail and make them much more lifelike and realistic
Thank you so much for your time and help, it was very helpful!

You're more than welcome.. I try my hardest to reply to everyone on Deviant (even if it takes me awhile).
As mentioned before the embossing tool is perfect.. Especially if your main subject matter is animals and humans. When I'm drawing humans I will use the tools to again doing the hair. I would also use it to do beards, moustaches, eye lashes and any tiny white dots etc.
It really does take your drawings to a whole new level.. Please let me know how you get on with getting them and how you find them and I look forward to seeing the improvement in your drawings once you've posted them on dA.

Pretty much.. I use my embossing tool to do all the white/light hairs and and then try to get as many hairs in as I can with my pencils.. Can be quite painstaking by I think then finished effect is well worth the time.

Sorry for the delay in replying to your last message I have been so busy with commissions and learning to become a tattooist that its very hard to keep up with Deviant.
Patience one day will come I'm sure.. The older I got the more I understood the importance of taking my time to get my drawings to the standard they are now.
I have actually speeded up now to what I used to be and with probably more detail.. I think this is because I have a lot if practice now and I've perfected my technique so I'm comfortable with my ability and I start a drawing now without worrying what the finished drawing will come out like.
Keep up the great standard of your art as you are very good.

As you get older you should find a technique that your completely comfortable with.. I have tried every technique out there over the years but I'm now comfortable with the way I draw.. I no longer question myself and I just get on with the drawing in hand as I'm very confident about the way it will turn out.. This took many years for me to be that confident.
To be honest 3-5 hours at a time is about the very maximum I can manage also.. I would then have a break for a few days and then get back on it.

Incredibly realistic. At a first glance, I had thought it to be a photo. Beautiful fur detail. Ā

Thank you so much for your great comment and I'm pleased you like it.. It is such an honour for me when people mistake my drawings for photos.. It means I must be doing something right??
Thanks again.
