Description
This is a larger size than I’m used to. I usually draw on A4 paper which is close to letter size in the States. Larger drawings mean more shading, in fact, more of everything and that translates to more time. When it’s finished, however, I love the bigger scale. Leonardo’s original is an oil painting so it was an interesting exercise to transform it to a monochromatic pencil drawing. One of the great benefits to copying these kinds of masterworks is that I can really take the time to appreciate the immense skill that went into making the original. There is an unexpected amount of detail in the painting but it only becomes apparent upon closer inspection. It is easy on the eye because everything is so wonderfully in harmony. Leonardo had a great understanding of tonal values and was able to create the illusion of a third dimension with ease. This portrait is also unusual because of the addition of an ermine. Apparently it was a common pet for the wealthy during this time. As usual, creating this piece was a wonderful learning experience.Graphite pencil on A3 (11.7” x 16.5”) Canson paper
