Description The known world includes these great skyfaring nations, among others still to be discovered:

The Federation
In a steampunk Elizabethan-Renaissance-medieval Europe, the United Federation of Greater Britannia sends forth a great Skyfleet of 12 airships, fanning out to every quarter of the sky, to explore the unknown lands and peoples of Europa, Asia, Africa and beyond.

The Elves of Vulcan
The chief allies of the Federation are the learned, ascetic and stoic elves who dwell in the desert known as Vulcan’s Forge, south of the Mediterranean (in North Africa).

Ages ago the elves of Vulcan were a barbarous warlike people, but the philosopher Surak convinced them to adopt a culture of reason and tolerance, rejecting irrationalism, aggression and uncontrolled emotion.

Other Allied Races
Other founding members of the Federation from beyond Britannia include:

- The Andorrians, blue-skinned warrior folk whose heads are adorned with queer horns or antennae, occupying a harsh kingdom in the Pyrenees Mountains.

- The Tellaritos, a race of stout, hairy and rather brusque-mannered dwarves living in Iberia.

The Elves of the Romulan Empire
Although the Old Romulan Empire fell long ago, a remnant still survives. In the east lies the elvish Romulan Empire of Byzantium. Haughty and prideful, the Romulans have long dreamed of rebuilding their lost empire.

A hundred years ago, the Romulans and Britannia fought a war using primitive seagoing ships, ending in a draw. The pride of the Romulan elves was stung by their inability to achieve victory. The emperor committed suicide and a new isolationist regime took power. The embittered legions withdrew to their central homelands, and the empire became inward-looking and focused on the past. For generations afterward the Romulans glowered disdainfully at the “inferior outlanders” from behind their fortified Balkan “Neutral Zone” and dreamt of past glory.

Of late, however, it appears a more ambitious emperor has ascended the throne, and the Romulans have again begun launching tentative raids into the lands beyond.

(In central Italia there is also a small remnant kingdom of humans that styles itself Magna Romula, but its rulers are mostly concerned with palace intrigue and staging gladiatorial entertainments in the arena, and it is of little account.)

The Klingons
Meanwhile, the warlike Klingon hordes in their furs and horned helmets come raiding from the northeastern steppes. Now the Klingons too have airships, and within his kremlin in Moskva the barbarian emperor also dreams of conquering the world.

The Suisse-Orionne
From their Alpine strongholds, the fiercely neutral Suisse-Orionne send forth merchants, pirates, smugglers and slave traders to all corners of the world.

And Others
In addition, the world is full of all other manner of human beings, elves, dwarves, ogres and other creatures living in their various empires, kingdoms, republics, free cities, villages, castles, encampments, ruins and caves.

No, you're thinking of "1101: A Sky Odyssey."

See, some knights crusading in the Holy Land come across this mysterious monolith ...

The concept actually came up after a discussion of "fresh twists needed for backgrounds for role-playing games."

No fic yet. Maybe fragments later. The trouble is, I write all day at work. When I'm relaxing, I tend to go more with pictures ...

Oh! Um. Oops.

Well, that's one of the reasons Queen Elizabeth sent out the H.M.S. Enterprise on a voyage of exploration -- to help correct all the inaccurate maps!
