Interesting perspective and very funny.
I'm gonna get all boring and serious now (sorry!) ... and assume that the situation is similar to a parent wanting to have children... and sure, the hope is that the child will love the parent in return - I think that's common and understandable... but it doesn't always work out that way - either due to the parent being too stressed or angry or even cruel & causing the child to hate them --- or sometimes the child misinterprets the parent's love and actions as something completely different, or the child becomes tempted to follow a different course than their (usually conservative) parent teaches - which in turn causes rebellion and separation.
I say all this because I see the tendency to hate the concepts of religion and control - understandably mostly due to the amounts of greed and lies that happen in the church - and in our world today we want our freedoms and not to be told what to do (which we see church as always telling us what to do - and causing us guilt). We also wrestle with issues of science vs faith... but must understand that much of what is discovered and theorized in science takes just as much faith... hypotheses and theorems are merely faith and ideas with different names - not necessarily all truths & facts.
So all this rambling is to summarize that if there's indeed a creator... he/she/it likely made the world to love it and would probably hope to be loved in return... or perhaps least appreciated... and almost certainly would want the creation as a whole to be nurtured and enjoyed by the people in it.
I think religion cuts short the experience and appreciation of what we've got. I think science can too in many ways.
When we rationalize and logicalize (not a word, I know) everything around us, there tends to be a lot less hopes and dreams. The more we learn as we age, the more we see corruption, the more we're hurt... we become bitter and sad and angry... perhaps even overly protective and greedy... and lose all the simple joy of just being an intelligent creature with the freedom to simply love and nurture and enjoy the world we're in.
Hope all this doesn't come across as heavy-handed or judgemental in any way, and if so - I apologize. Just wanted to share my perspective on your cartoon - and I wish you all the best and can't wait to see what you come up with next!

If there is a creator, there's nothing wrong with wanting to be loved and appreciated. However, I don't think threatening people with eternal punishment is the best way to gain that respect.

Agreed - I don't think threat is appropriate... but consider the threat is likely more from human-created religion and not likely direct from the voice of a creator. I could assume that if there's a soul that needs to be "put somewhere" after physical death, If that soul had lived life hating anything about God and Creation... then perhaps there's a place their soul can be so they don't have to "be with/near" the creator... and perhaps conceptually this becomes something of a hell only because then the soul realizes what they were missing out on by not being interested in the creator and in turn being a "follower" or "family" with him/her/it, and conversely find themselves with regret, perhaps a sense of longing or loneliness... dunno. Just guesses and interpretations.
I appreciate that by and large these issues are cropping up more. There was a period (and may continue to be for some time) that we looked to science to answer a lot of questions, but are finding that there's only more questions... and no final definite answers on "the meaning of life" or "is there a god"... so we keep coming back to it - cuz we wanna know if there is any answer to those questions, as the answer would help steer our course... give us hope, or give a solid answer to our doubts.
All I can say is - don't only look to our fellow humans for god's voice, since humans are often flawed, quick to judge, easily justify half-truths or even bold-faced lies. Instead look to creation... allow the voice of the creator to use what he/she/it has made to speak. Contemplate... question... and go without fear of the answer. But for the sake of your fellow humans - make sure you don't invent something and claim it to be true if there's a hint of falsehood or there's unanswered questions or any uncertainties. The world doesn't need any more false hope.

I've often thought about this... hey, should check out an old 60's film 'Bedazzled' (Yeah, recent remake with Brendan Fraser) had Peter Cook as devil and Dudley Moore as human... funny scene about the devil getting sick of praising God, asks if he can have a turn of getting praise, and imediatley is sent to hell for suggesting it...
