If I had a nickel for every time I heard one of these excuses...I would be rich enough to buy deviantART and hire new admins.

When used with screenshots a vector is tracing...
Mind you it's not a real vector people just call it a vector so it's an excuse...
What they do is take a screen shot of an anime they like or somebody elses picture and then trace over it on photoshop or another art program... Then after they trace over it they delete the background original image and claim the traced as their own. They get away with this by calling it a vector.
I'm sorry you made this comment about two months ago but I thought I should reply XD

I dunno about others, but personally I find it easier to learn to draw rather then tracing, because regardless of whether the paper used to trace on is a special kind designed for tracing or not, it's difficult to see the original image that I'm tracing from. I will admit, though, my art is partially influenced by TV & other artists; however I try my best to encorporate such styles into forming my own style.

Great stamp! People would actually learn something if they drew from life, rather than trace.

Since I got pretty good now, I'm not tracing art from my paper anymore.

("I can't draw"? People ACTUALLY used that as an excuse? That's so stupid it's funny. XDD )
I can't agree more.

Please subscribe to the account ITS-MY-WORK. This is an account dedicated to the artists who don't like the new rules set by DA. Tracing/Copying/etc, is not a legitimate form of art, and this account is against that.
We were wondering if you would be willing to create something for us that we could post on our page (with proper copyrights going to you, of course - for it is not our art) that shows that you feel the same way, if you do.
Please reply ASAP. We are trying to get this movement going fast.
Also, if you feel that this is something that you agree with, we hope that you pass on the news, so we can grow quickly.
Thank you.

I hate that kind of crap. It's one thing to use a reference legitimately. It's another to trace someone's artwork and claim it as your own for changing parts.
And for the record, most people who use the "vector" excuse wouldn't know what one was if it bit them in the kneecaps.

Damn right. I think the last time I traced something I was drawing when I was about 7 I never liked tracing stuff anyway.
I do reference from other images quite often because I need too. But I at least have the sense not to totally copy what is there and only use what elements I need, pose, anatomy ect.

I always found tracing boring. It's half the reason I never ink anything either I have the attention span of a gnat.
Referencing is good! Refs help you learn.

I haven't inked traditionally coloured anything of mine in quite a while. I've just been sketching a lot because I want to get better at using my tablet so I want a stock of images to work on. XD
Yes it is, I have to do most my work from photo/other pics refs because it's the easiest way for me to find stuff.

What has anyone ever learned from tracing? Using a picture as reference and attempting to mimic the style/features is how you learn. Even better if you attempt to mix different features from many references to make something new.
But tracing? That's a good way to learn how to trace.

Wisdom!
The only value I can see in tracing is line control. So when you trace your own pictures, to ink them, you don't mess it all up. But that doesn't need to be posted on deviantART in the "fan art" section, now does it...

Yeah, my own pictures are the only things I trace I do that whenever I color something of mine in photoshop since digitizing the lines makes it look better in the end.

Tracing your own pictures for lineart purposes is just fine, and pretty much expected, haha.

yeah lol. I have a tablet but that's just to make it easier. I still prefer doing the raw sketch with a pencil and paper

I have not yet mastered the art of tablet inking or drawing. I just end up making my lineart look awful.
But it's damn handy for coloring...

I couldn't agree more, tracing artwork is pretty lame anyway. Anybody using Tineye could find them out easy.

Haha, yeah. It's sad when a traced work is so similar to the original that TinEye matches it
Which reminds me, I should link to TinEye somewhere in the club. Thanks.
