Description The FAQ, the Copyright Policy, and the Etiquette Policy all say things that should raise a big flag when somebody traces.

Why this big exception for fan art?

It's not your art when you trace. It's somebody else's work, with your modifications.

Which, by the way, is NOT YOURS.

Actually tracing isnt stealing its an action, you are tracing the picture, or map to make a copy. Tracing isn't involved with stealing in any definition. Yes, it's not your actual art or style but yet again you aren't stealing you are just taking someone's work and making it your own.

So, what exactly constitutes tracing? What are the criteria?

Seriously, who cares what dA rules say anymore? dA's just trying to please everyone with "ohhhh, tracing is FINE as long as you do it on different layers and publish it in the fan art section~!" but we all know it's different.

there is a few artists out there that trace alot and profit from it obviously shepard fairey is one of them, and he is having legal issues now. also is a graffiti artist from san franciso named becca midwood. all her stuff is traced. you can ggole her work. it is obvious to me, i mean they look like sewing patterns but i think some people do not know that and buy her work thinking she came up with these original drawings of little girls and women, but they are all traced. i know someone that worked with her at a gallery in los angeles.

I agree with Nikkicub as well. It is an insult to the artist.

Damn right it's not. I agree with Nikkicub, it's an insult to the original artists and to the rest of the fanbase when you trace official art and submit it as fanart.

Yeah, it really is insulting- to have your own art plagiarized and spit back at you as "fan art"! I mean, I'd be offended

Traced art is, in fact, highly disrespectful to your fandom. :/ If you love it so much, why not put real effort into fanworks?

Exactly what I think. I would be ashamed to show the original creator something traced.

I get fan art for my webcomic sometimes, and I tell ya, it's the best feeling in the world. The quality of the artwork simply doesn't matter that much. If it's really breathtaking, that's great, but mostly it's the feeling of someone liking your work enough to put time and effort into their very own piece, for you. So I don't think people should worry about "not being good enough" because it's truly the thought that counts.

Sorry for the ramble there...

Oh that's a nice speech.
The bit about the quality, because sometimes, it's sooo hard!
Took me ages to draw one person from a manga the other day... but it came out good. I'd feel so unproud (u=is that a word) if I'd traced it.
