Tracing is nothing but an excuse for people who cannot draw. If you can't draw, go to Google and search how to draw properly or go to Youtube. Youtube has bunch of videos to teach how to draws.

The majority of LPS (toy fandom, not cartoon) artists trace images of the toys. And people actually request and commission them.

I am so disappointed (and mad) about tracers. People who aren't artists see their work and think they are geniuses. If they want to really know if someone is a true artist, ask them to draw something that doesn't already exist, they will either refuse or the caliber will be completely different. I'm not talking about practicing, exploring new techniques and non professionals. I am talking about the people who make money off of this. Referencing a photo is fine but tracing each tiny detail then shading it and charging for your "original" artwork is bs. It's even better when they post a WIP pic and you an see all the outlines. But they make a ton of $ off of their talent.

If you want to work on your OC's so much you should do your own work end of story, heck i am a pretty crappy drawer but I am proud of it cause I do my own work and didn't have to hide behind tracing.

as long as u trace something and use it as a base and give the person credit ur good, coloring it in and adding details to the trace by urself is ur own credit but the wrong thing is tracing it saying its ur credit

I understand that this is a true thing, and yes, people should gain permission before doing any sort of edit or copy. The thing that gets to me is how stupid life is anymore. Especially in the U.S.A.
"Hey, you used my art! I'M SUING! SUE!"
Why? So you can sue about a picture you drew? A picture? Really? Is Β it worth the time to scan the internet for copies and edits of your work? I'm sure you could be making new art, or get into a true career.
But, nevertheless, it shall continue. It will never end. When the close-mindedness ends, then maybe things will get better.
Better?
hah..

I agree. People who trace are not being artists at all. Tracing is an excuse to copy over someone else's work.

I've seen quite a few traces here, and at least one tracer was mentioned in an early "How NOT To Draw" issue that I wrote in my journal here.

Just curious about your stancing on vectors, many fanart vectors are actual tracings from a scene. Is that equally bad?

If tracing makes you an artist, then shitting into a pot and pouring the melted contents into moulds make you a chocolate maker.

touche, it can help you learn to draw, but don't ever show to anyone and call it your art

honestly if you don't have the talent to draw your OWN art then don't draw at all

I admit, I traced when I was in 6th and 7th grade. Like FJC92 said, I stopped because I worked on drawing I can understand a child who wants to draw doing it because when I did trace, that helped me out with learning how to draw (proportions, how clothing lies/flows, etc), but someone like older, high school even... no. Just no.
