Description
Alrighty everyone, the In Privet Task!Sayest always checks the straps of his saddle before mounting up to make sure they were done and tightened properly. Now he shouldn't have to do this. He is the king and that dragon should be saddled correctly otherwise literal heads will roll, but his paranoia won't let him not do it. Because of the whole flying aspect of dragon riding, incorrectly fastened saddles could easily mean a death sentence. He refuses to take the risk.

One of my favorite pieces in the OC-T so far! Isn't that dragon cute?
I love the warm coloring of this piece - the sandy coloring of the dragon is simply striking and looks so natural! The background also is nicely rendered, with just enough details and outstanding colors (esp. the greens of the trees/shrubbery) to make it into a wholesome picture, yet not detailed enough to distract from the foreground.
(Also, markers! I'm so impressed
)
Sayest's posture also looks so casual, and it's clear he's familiar with checking his own saddle. I think this quirk of his really shows parts of his personality, in a way - he is a paranoid man who refuses to take risks, and in doing so was able to get as far as he is in life - being meticulous pays off, especially for antagonists, who can't afford casual mistakes that may lead to eventual dethroning (or falling off a saddle, for that matter. )
(That being said, I've been mulling over this question for a while, and I hope you don't mind me asking - but taking Trowan's story into account, did Sayest order to attack the Sword-and-Wielder School because there may have been a royal child enrolled at the school (whom he needed to die)? I cannot help but wonder why he'd give out an order like that, and I hope you don't mind my curiosity too much! )

Why thank you! I have to say, this is one of my favorites. For once the colors turned out how I wanted and I couldn't be happier.
I based the dragon design on a horned lizard (like this guyΒ thumbs-prod.si-cdn.com/W2kAPckβ¦ ) because I wanted it to look like a reptile that belonged in the desert. I figured if this was the homeland of dragons, I needed to make it look like they belonged there.Β
(To answer your question, it was more practicality that made him order that attack. One of the express purposes of that organization, and school, was to defend the country from invaders. A lot of their focus was on individual and small scale teams working against a larger number of opponents, so he would only have to miss a couple and he could still have a serious problem on his hands. Yes, most of the students were children, but almost all of them were well trained and the ones in the last couple years of their education could still be a serious threat. Even half trained kids could still potentially do damage if they have nothing to loose. Not only that, but many of the teachers at the school were among the best, and the threat they posed couldn't be ignored. Also also/i>, any powerful magical artifacts the group had were most likely to be at the school in the first place.
If he truly thought there was a royal child there, he would have gone himself. He's the only one who could kill them without incurring the wrath of the curse. Plus he couldn't allow anyone else to claim that particular victory.)

Well, as a lot of people say "better safe than sorry", even more if it have your own life in risk lmao
I can honestly understand that paranoia, and I will say he isn't wrong in being double sure that he won't die because of the mistake of someone else.
I absolutely love the dragon!! It looks amazing and kinda of friendly somewhat.

Definitely true, he doesn't like to leave anything to chance., although I think he's more worried about deliberate sabotage then simple mistakes. As for the dragon, I' sure she's real friendly, to people she likes.

I guess preventing is much better than cure for him......or...... maybe he just doesn't want to die ridiculously for some stupid reasons.
Die in honor, like from enemies blade..... not die in embarrassment, like fall from height just because the saddle is not buckled up properly!
Riding a dragon! It's really a dream in our world! Imagine you can ride a winged beast that can take you anywhere easily. And here, King Sayest can do it in his world!
Nice scene there by the way, especially for the dragon!

Probably both.
I would love to ride a dragon! I'm not necessarily a thrill seeker but I love riding horses and I'm not afraid of heights. It sounds like one of the coolest things ever!

Fantastic coloring as usual Β Really enjoy the design of the dragon; it seems to be in it's natural element with the landscape around it.Β The quirk is extremely fitting a believable to his character.Β He can't afford to be careless or trusting... Is there anyone whom he trusts at all?

Why thank you! I'm sure he has some people in court that are on his side, although probably mostly their own gain. One thing I realized halfway through training was, if he's a king, sitting on a throne, there's no way he's not married. I mean, back in olden times they started setting up marriages for royalty almost right away in some cases. So now I have this character that I know has to exist, but I don't know anything about her yet.

Β Funny how that works with story-writing...
Makes me curious about what kind of person his wife would be, but I guess you'll have to figure that out first!

(And now I have this idea about how she could be a major part of the plot of book 2...)

The details on the dragon are incredible!
The scales, the profile, the eye, the details of the wings and their own structure- it is an impressive display of dragon anatomy!
The saddle is well-designed! It look like no other creature bu a dragon it was designed for.
Sayest's concern is prudent- wise he takes time to check the saddle straps!

Thanks! Back when I was still learning how to draw dragons I found a tutorial on how to do the wings right and it really stuck with me. Now whenever I draw a dragon I combine what I learned there with any pictures of bat wings I can find.

That dragon is . . . kind of cute. I love its sandy colors. Is he nervous that someone might not do the straps properly in an attempt to assassinate him?Β

Isn't it?! I love it too. I was trying for something more based off a lizard then a more traditional dragon (which I usually give a more horse like shape).

That is very sensible, even if driven by paranoia (which is honestly understandable with saddles on flying dragons!)Β
Β I love how beautiful this piece is! Β All the greens and sand tones! Β The dragon is so well done, his wing is so realistic, and his face is so cute!!
Β I love the scenery in the back, too! Β The lovely textures are great, especially the dragons stripes and the sand details and the beautiful mountains! Β Amazing work!!

One of the instances where sensible and paranoia are the same thing. They have to happen every once in a while.Β
I'm so glad you like how this came together. I think it's one of my favorites.

Very nice to see the dragons finally! I love how you did the details of this piece and the details of saddle in particular, as well as the sand texture on the floor. This shows a very practical side of Sayest and it's clear this reflects his desire to succeed at all costs.

I wanted to play around with my standard dragon design and try and make something that was more lizard like. I wanted something that felt like it was built for hot and dry climates. I'm glad I was able to show more of Sayest. That's always my goal for training.
