Description
origins of Original the Character™.
I felt like expanding on my own rendition of Shadow the Hedgehog.
Maria was born with an incurable illness: NIDS, or Neuro-Immuno Deficiency Syndrome, which weakens both the nervous and immune systems over time, and can become susceptible to fatal viruses and even severe heart damage. After her parents died of unexplained causes, she was taken in by her uncle, Gerald Robotnik, who brought her with him to the Space Colony ARK outside the Earth's atmosphere, in hopes of preserving her fragile immune system from the diseases of the Earth while he struggled to find a cure, or at the very least, a treatment to keep the illness at bay. Since he was a man of mechanical science, he focused on adjusting nano-tech as a way to kill viruses and repair nerve damage.
His project was funded by the US government, as it could potentially save many lives also affected by NIDS. He performed experiments on deceased anthro-creatures, discovered and kept secret by government officials, to both satisfy human curiosity and test his own nano-tech on. One after another, his experiments met with disappointing results; that was, until #009SH . He was the first to respond to revitalization, with a cybernetically enhanced brain, heart, spine, and eyes. But the technology had no way to stay self-sufficient without an internal power source, so newly discovered power rings were applied to his wrists and ankles, which truly gave him independent life support.
The moment of truth finally came when Gerald Robotnik decided to remove the experiment from it's test tube. If it could breathe and walk on it's own, the experiment will be another step towards success. With support from his niece, the creature was able to take it's first breath of oxygen and even stand up.
He left educating the creature to his niece, who took an immediate fondness for it, even giving it it's own name: Shadow. The cybernetic enhancement of Shadow's brain made him a fast learner, but he was still technically a newborn, and absorbed every lesson with intrigue and innocence. Maria was Shadow's mentor and best friend, and his growth gave Robotnik hope in a future for his niece.
And one day, that hope was destroyed with brute force.A new organization known as G.U.N., the Guardian Units of Nations, shutdown Robotnik's project upon suspicion of illegal experimentation. Although Robotnik plead that he had done nothing outside of what he was given permission to do by the US Military, he was arrested by US militia. Orders were given to move all subjects and lab work into a secluded area on the Earth. Afraid of what would become of Shadow, Maria ran with him into a separate lab chamber (although it was quite difficult for her, with walking alone being a challenge at times), placing and locking him into an escape pod. With what little time they had left, she begged Shadow to live in peace, even if she couldn't be there with him in person. She wanted him to smile and feel happy for her, and one day, maybe smile and be happy without her, to live wholly for himself.
A soldier burst into the room and tried to kill Shadow, but Maria shielded him from the shot, killing her instantly.
Although he made it safely to Earth's surface, his pod's coordinates did not take long to find, and he was still taken in by G.U.N.
The fate of his existence was settled on preservation as a weapon of war, and was cryogenically frozen.
