So I found out about the Great Hairy Beast Gehara online the other day. Which is basically just Godzilla in a wig. Man I love goofy giant monsters. Doodling Gehara made me realize that most Kaiju fall into a few basic shapes.The Godzilla: giant bipedal lizard with fat legs, a tail and a long neck.
The Ultraman: dude in spandex with a helmet on.
The Gabara/Rodan: a middle ground between Godzilla and Ultraman, so bigger than a guy in spandex but not exactly a giant dinosaur and probably has some extra stuff going on like wings.
Shit on a String: some stuff hanging from wires, like snakes and UFO thingumabobs.
Of course the 10% of monsters that don't fit in the other categories are just Aberrations. So Eleking is a Godzilla variation. Baltan aliens are an Ultraman take off with lobster claws. And so on. But there are weirdos like Nova who is a guy in spandex wearing a red sheet but is also a ball on a string tied to a sheet. Ah Japanese special effects, I love the wackiness.
(Dev Art spell checker is weird. It puts a red line under "Ultraman" but not under "thingumabobs".)

Yeah but Nova's "blanket on a balloon" is treated just as seriously as Manda. That's the funny part.
