SHORT STORY by AthenaCykes
It was *supposed* to just be a fun day, playing around in the river. That’s what Margaret had thought it would be, that’s what everyone had thought it would be. Everyone would splash and cool down from the June heat, and they’d go home all happy and soaked to the bone, cooled down and maybe even with bags full of fish. Margaret had not expected to spend her afternoon clinging to a rock for dear life, feeling her fingers slowly slipping as water rushed over them and over them, eroding away her grip on the rock, and her one chance at survival. Or at least, avoiding a broken leg. Not twenty feet from where she clung, There was a waterfall. Steep as all hell, and certainly able to rush someone down fast enough to break a leg, if not a neck. Her tears hit the river as she bit her lip, Margaret was perhaps more terrified than she’d ever been in her entire life. The river was fast, faster than they’d expected. The five tokotas up at the top were her only hope. Delta was the first to notice that Margaret was swept away, without warning. Delta liked the handler an awful lot, and had been planning on following Margaret down the river- her hair tie had been dragged away when she tried to redo her pony tail as it came loose, and as broke as she always seems to be, Margaret chased it down the river. Sakae and Deja had sat with delta, waiting for the handler to come back. Five minutes passed, and then ten. Anakin and Darth Jar Jar seemed rather un interested in Margaret’s disappearance, not even noticing she was gone until Delta spoke up about it. The two turned and shrugged as she’d asked if they’d seen where Margaret had gone, and went back to their general plotting about god knows what, which often seems to be all they ever do. But Delta was worried. The river was pretty strong, and the pull of it only got stronger and deeper down by the waterfall on the cliff. She felt, deep down in her bones, that Margaret was most likely in danger. And she was not about to just sit there and let something bad happen to her. With a commanding bark, she got out of the river, with Deja and Sakae following close behind her. It took two more barks before Darth Jar Jar and Anakin were convinced to leave the large river, and they took the right handed bank, across from the other three tokotas, just in case if Margaret was closer to that side, Delta supposed. The river was fairly long, and the water fall was quite a ways off. The five of them kept a steady pace, with Delta taking the lead on the left river bank and Darth Jar Jar taking the lead, somewhat behind her, on the right bank of the river. They would have gone faster, but had the handler been knocked out, then she might be harder to spot, and they tried to keep them selves from having even the smallest chance of missing her.
Margaret’s throat was hoarse and hurting, and she’d long given up yelling, she’d been trapped there for over twenty minutes now, and wasn’t sure how much longer she could hold on. She was a strong person, but it was cold, and what water was making it ever harder to keep her grip on the rock and keep her head above water. Her eyes were closed in concentration as she clung, stranded in the middle of the river, way too far from the banks to hope to swim on it. Were it not for the tokotas coming to find her, she could have been out of luck. But Deja always has been just a little bit lucky. She spotted Margaret first, with sharp eyes, and ran ahead with a quick, piercing bark to alert the other tokotas and the desperate handler herself that she’d been spotted, that help was on the way. Margaret’s hands were so close to having fallen off, that until she heard that brk, she’d thought all hope was lost. But as she opened her eyes and Saw not just Deja, but Sakae and Delta, she smiled. But as she did, her grip on the rock, clinging to it with only her left hand now, finally faltered, and she was immediately rushed down the river. Everyone, herself included, was in a panic. But then, something no one was expecting happened. Darth Jar Jar leapt past Anakin, into the deep, and dangerous water just feet from the waterfall, and grabbed the struggling handler before dragging them both back to shore on the very edge of the cliff. The swim had been a good twenty feet against roaring water fighting him every inch and as he pulled the handler back, he fell to his knees, exhausted. Anakin was immediately at his side, as was Margaret, as she gently ran her hands through his long mane. “Thank you...” She muttered in a near, but highly sincere and clearly thankful whisper. “Thank you.” Sakae, Delta, and Deja watched nervously from the other bank, until Margaret thought to call out to the three of them. “He’s alright!” She yelled as she stood up. “And so am I!” Delta let out a breath she hadn’t quite realized she’d been holding at the realization that it had all worked ok, even if just barely. She was truly thankful that they’d thought to come down the river to look for her or they most certainly would have been too late to save her. Deja let out a bark to tell the other two to follow her, and Sakae did quietly as Delta paused to look at the three across the river before catching up. The three of them headed far up the river until the got to part that was shallow and slim enough to cross before heading down the other side as Anakin nervously watched over Darth Jar Jar and Margaret as the two of them sat a ways away from the river bank together, both soaking wet and completely exhausted. He paced this way and that, not sure how to help, or if he even could, until he saw the other three approaching in the distance. Sakae, surprisingly, took a lead for once and ran right up to Margaret, gently nuzzling the girl with her soft nose, invoking a giggle from the handler that Made Sakae smile as well. She stood up as Sakae lifted her head, giving her nose and ears gentle, pleasant rubs before turning to the others. Delta and Deja got pats, and Anakin did too. As Margaret knelt down by Darth Jar Jar, he could see the tears forming in the corners of her eyes as she exclaimed “You saved me! Thank you, all!” This provoked Darth Jar Jar to stand up, and head in the direction of home, and Margaret ran to mount Delta as Anakin followed him. Delta caught up to him and took the lead, as Deja and Sakae trailed behind as the group of six made their way home.
