SHORT STORY by AthenaCykes
There it was! The lake! While Margaret had taken Kimy and Maya hunting plenty of times before, it was clear to her that they didn’t like it, but in hunts, they all had to work together, perhaps Sakae would drive the prey towards Tawanna or Pamely and Maya would have to make the kill, but she’d noticed that the two of them weren’t too fond of it at all, and sometimes, in their nervousness, would let the prey, be it deer or seals or goats, escape. And Margaret really couldn’t have that. Besides, Margaret had bruised up her arm pretty badly the last time she’d gone out hunting seals, when a mother seal had rammed her for getting to close to her pup, thinking she was a danger to her pup. Margaret couldn’t help but be a little offended, even if the mother was right. They *were* out hunting seals, after all. But after that, she was keen to take a little break from sword swinging (as much as she loved it) and aggressive prey, so fishing seemed like the perfect option. She could chill on the beach or go swimming in the water as she did bring a net, and fish are usually too stupid to fight back. It was the perfect plan! Maya looked at the water and beach happily, she was glad to be doing something other than hunting on this day out with Margaret for a change. She liked Margaret, she really did, but it seemed that whenever they went out with Margaret, they were hunting something, and Maya hates hunting. Kimy nudged Maya gently with her nose as they approached the beach, playfully. The two of them loved to sit together in the sand and bask in the sun, or to go on nice walks at the edge of the water, their feet gently licked by the waves. Sakae followed close behind them, she looked at the waves, looking for fish. You might not guess it to look at her, but Sakae is actually quite the accomplished fisher, and she has a keen eye for spotting fish. In fact, Margaret was rather lucky that she chose to ride Tawanna instead of Sakae, because Sakae suddenly saw a fish, and without a moment’s notice, jumped in in an attempt to catch it, splashing all the other girl’s in the party. The only one who seemed unhappy about the choice to go fishing was Pamely. Her beautiful, curly mane took a long time to dry out, and she preferred to avoid getting it wet when possible, but she supposed that today, it was a necessary evil. Shaking out her hair to hopefully avoid it all getting stuck together, she ran into the water after Sakae, ready to look for fish of her own. Tawanna, ready to go as always, looked up towards Margaret as she made some whining noises, and Margaret just shook her head. She dismounted the girl and began unbuckling the saddle and saddle bags, though she barely had them off of the antsy red girl before she was in the water, too. She laughed as she put the heavy saddle away, watching as Maya and Kimy nosed each other towards the water, both daring the other to be the first one to go in with giggles and smiles that Margaret couldn’t help but copy. Margaret plopped down in the soft sand, unlacing her boots and then taking her socks off too, balling them up and tossing them in her left boot. She ran into the water past Maya and Kimy, prompting the two to look at one another before both jumping in at once, right past a satisfied looking Sakae, who was plopping her second fish on the shore, dead by her powerful teeth. Pamely had decided that if she *must* get her hair wet, she was going to make it absolutely worth it, and so was currently swimming after the biggest fish she could find in the river, her determination only matched by the fish’s determination not to become a meal. As she swam around viciously, Maya inadvertently drove a fish right towards a satisfied Tawanna’s mouth, While Kimy caught a fish of her own. Margaret was doing her best to drive the huge fish back towards the pride-filled Pamely, while Maya now hunted for a fish of her own. It continued like this for over an hour, until the sun grew low in the sky, and Pamely emerged onto the shore, victorious, a huge, impressive fish in her mouth. While everyone else had caught multiple fish, she was glad to have her prize, and she began to trot off home, still carrying it in her mouth, without a look back at the others. Margaret pulled herself out of the water as fast as possible, the sand sticking to her feet as she yelled for Pamely to put that fish in a saddle bag this instant. The others also slowly got out of the water, collecting their fish in a pile for when Margaret got back and they could all get packed up to go home.
