Description I've had a few requests for tutorials on this coif and some of my other projects, so while I can't work on new projects I thought I'd put one together.

A note on Ring Sizes / how many rings you'll need;
For this coif I used 3,511 16g 3/8" Aluminum Rings, which created a costume coif big enough for most adults. You may need more or fewer rings then I did, and your count will also change if you use a different ring size.  Estimate high when making/buying your rings.

I Hope this helps I'd love to see what you make if follow this tutorial  What else should I make a tutorial about?

______
For those interested, I made a little DIY Kit with this tutorial, and all the supplies needed to make the coif, check it out in my shop here:  www.streetmaille.etsy.com/list…

Thank you so much for this tutorial! After years of trying to understand how to start one this finally got through my thick skull!!!!

I'm having a minor issue. The back isn't hanging as low as the sides. Will this balance out once I reach the chin? or will the back of the head just require more rows? Or did I goof somewhere?

It's hard to say without seeing it, but I would double check to make sure everything seems even (same number of rows of rings from top to sides, as from top to back), before continuing. In my experience they are usually pretty even through the whole process. It can be helpful to have a friend or display head wear it to check for errors. Sorry for my delayed response, but good luck finishing your coif!

It was maker error actually! lmao. I kept putting it on too far forward.

Not a bad tutorial.  Just as a note for future ones though, you may want to use some different color rings for your indicators.  The black ones show up okay in most of the shots, but in some they are a little more difficult to pick out (mostly in the shots where they're in a denser pattern).  Red would probably show up in almost all situations.

Also, thank you for stressing the importance of good closures.  I couldn't tell you how many maillers I see flooding the market with inferior goods due to their lack of attention to their closures.

Thanks for the note! I went with black this round because I needed a Black and white version of this tutorial for easier printing, but you're right they don't always show up as well, in the future I'll probably use a different color.

And I'm totally with you on closures! Smooth seams forever

Gauntlets (leather or canvass backed or otherwise) or a hauberk would seem to be the logical progression.
