Review of Garfield : Caught in the Act(MegaDrive/Genesis version)
That game was released in 1995 by SEGA of America for Genesis MegaDrive and in 1996 for PC, but I'll only talk about the Genesis MegaDrive.
Backstory of how I got the game :
I found it in a garage sale for 5 bucks... 5 years ago.
Story :
Garfield was calmly sitting on the couch watching the TV(without eating for some reason) suddenly, Odie startled him by barking! Garfield fell on the tv and broke it. Without knowledge of how to repair a TV, they somehow managed to rebuild it with spare pieces... meh... maybe not important. So he threw them behind the couch which created an electric monster, Glitch! Glitch grabbed Garfield arms and teleported both of them in the TV...
This game had 6 levels :
1)Count Slobula :
Classic Horror themed level happening in a cemetary
The boss(Odie has a vampire) is actually extremely hard.
You have to hit Count Slobula who'll return to one of the three coffins, then use it to jump higher and grab the curtain, he'll get hit, do it three times and you'll defeat him.
I don't know from which episode it's based from.
P.S.: It's better to pass it.
2) Revenge of Orangebeard :
Pirate themed level in two parts. Voguing on the sea and in the jungle.
The boss is a giant skeleton throwing it head at you. Not hard when you have plenty of ammunition.
Based on the Halloween special.
P.S.: I loved the mysterious ambiance of exploring the first part had, the jungle part will make you dance and bounce Garfield around!
3)Cave Cat 3, 000, 000 :
Prehistorical themed level in two parts(no real difference)
The boss is an Odiesaurus jumping around while... and active volcano is throwing rocks on you. Hit Odie with the catapult and your bone.
Based on the Nine Life of Garfield
P.S.: The second music is the best. I felt a lack of something about the first theme until I hear the PC version, what was missing were the people signing.
4)Catsablanca :
Noir themed level, basically a parody of Casablanca.
The boss is a dog throwing bomb, it's easy to get what to do.
Based on a flashback or one of his imagination...
P.S.: It's a maze
5)The Curse of Cleofatra :
Egyptian exploration themed level.
The boss is a Sphinx with Jon's face isn't really hard
Hit his eyes while making him geting lower(there's torch you need to light activate his fall).
Based on The Nine Life of Garfield.
P.S.: Take a close look to Arlene's statues. are those round parts under her head her paws or her breasts?
6) Season Finale :
Glitch itself! It'll throw electric balls, but... you DON'T have weapon!? What to do? Push the panels, they'll reflect the energies and return them to it.
Based on nothing, but I would had wanted to see it in a comic or cartoon...
P.S.: That's one of the COOLEST BOSS EVER, mostly because of the music but everytimes you beated a level it was there sending you back in the TV. It's the only obstacle between getting out of the TV and you.
I love it scream and laugh.
The hub is the inside of the TV.
The music is pretty creepy in a way when you think about it... alone, stuck in a TV with a monster ready to attack at any moment... when you lose a life or get the Game Over screen it's Nightmare Fuel with IT laugh...
You have two kind of special bonus stages
1)Whack-A-Mole(unlocked when you get the Mallet). What's special about it is you CAN'T hit the specific character shown at the start. Collect all the letters and you'll get a continue.
2)Coffee Break when you beat a level.
Collect the Pookys at high-speed
Jim Davis handmade mostly ALL the sprites in the game.
It's a very great gem if you're a fan of plat-formers.
My verdict BUY, Play it or give it a try!
