Description The Frilled moniter is a large breed or reptile that is very unique. These reptiles were first found in remote parts of rocky grasslands. The exact location however is unknown to to protect the wild populations of these reptiles. The Rising Tides Hatchery was the first to successfully breed two wild caught specimens, and develope the first captive bred hatchlings. RTH was also the first to create the first morphs in the species.

Species nick names: FMs, Gentle Giants
Life expectancy: 15-30 years
Temperment: Surprisingly, captive bred Finned Monitors are quite curious and even friendly if properly exposed and handled when young. In the wild although large and quite heavy, these guys will try and avoid conflicts with other species. Often trying to scare away possible threats with their brightly colored frills, hisses, and the puffing up of their throat.

male weight: 200-300 lbs
male length: 10-13 ft
male height: 4-5 feet

Female weight: 180-250 lbs
Female length: 6-10 ft
female height: 3-4 feet
clutch size: 3-6 eggs

Gender differences: Males posses a large horn on their nose and a large frill on the back of their neck. The horns are used to “battle” other males for the right to breed. These battles very rarely end in injury, and do not occur very often. Males also have a more pronounced chin. The male’s large neck frill is more commonly used to attract mates. The brighter the neck frills color and the larger it is the more interesting the male seems to females. These neck frills are also used to scare away possible threats. Bothe males and females will fan out their frill and darken their colors into deep blood reds and oranges with eye spots to try and confuse/scare the possible threat.

Colors: One of the more unique features of FMs is that they don’t have their own color morphs. Instead, they seem to take after Ball pythons and leopard gecko colors. The only difference is their frill, which seems to be able to be any color no matter the genetics. After years of breeding, FMs can come in any morph Ball pythons and leopard geckos can, and can even have cross bred morphs of the two types!

Breeding: after about a month after a Female is bred to a male, the female will lay around 3-6 eggs. In the wild, the female will dig a hole and lay her eggs. Once done, she will create a mound of earth and leaves over they eggs and lay over it to help warm and protect them. After 2 months, the eggs will hatch and the female’s job will be done. She leaves the hatchlings to defend themselves. Things are a bit different in captivity though. Once a female lays her eggs, the breeder will collect them and put them in a special incubator to hatch. Because of the horn FMs already have, they have no egg tooth. Instead, they use their horns to hatch out of their eggs. Once hatched, the babies are about 10 inches in length.

Housing: Because of their large size, FMs must be kept in large penned off areas. These pens can be either indoors or outdoors. They must have one large warm hide with a heater underneath for belly heat, as well as a large cool hide. Their pens must also have a specialized heat lamp for sunbathing (this is only included if the pens do not get sufficient sunlight all day), A small pool for soaking, and room for the FM to walk around in. Females can be kept together with sufficient space, however males must be kept separate.
