Description
this was done for the first assignment in illustration class. image is from a reference photocopy provided by the instructor. spent about 7 hours on it, done with 3B and HB pencils (and eraser) on smooth bristol paper. Image size: 10x13". this is also my first portrait style since highschool around '87. might do some more fine-tuning on it, it's been a while...Related content

Fantastic! I love the light and shadow refracted through the glasses. Really adds to the depth and realism a lot (as well as the excellent hair).
It's always amazing to go back to a style or form of art you haven't done in years and pick up right where you left off (or better). It's almost always a happy reunion.

Oh yee of many avatars !! ...this is awesome... i knew you had attention to detail down pat from your other works ...but applied in this manner i never fathomed from you ...
THAT is some serious pencil work...!! ( he looks a bit like Ed Begley Jr. ...lol )... I dont think i could do that well with realism in pencil ...

thanks man, i'm kinda getting into drawing realistic stuff now, quite a change eh? it's what i need to do though. for now anyway. i feel like alot of the detail psychedelic type doodles were good practice to help develop control and technique, or something...

I don't know if the finger going into the nose is too bright or not... Seems like there should be slightly more shadow, or the nose should have a hot spot or something...
well done with the hair line and wrinklings of the face.

I was trying to work with pencil earlier today...and remembered why I hate it soo much. SMUDGY !! Gah..This is brilliant though. I admire the detail...especially for a self portrait, a definate soft spot for an artist.

yeah, pencil is smudgy, have to be careful to put paper or something under drawing hand.
(btw, it's not a self portrait, but i might have to try one now that you've mentioned it)

wow, really nice work. i love the lighting and i think youve captured it perfectly! aswell, his face and glasses are really well done. the only thing though, i think his fingers look slightly....flat and just a little bit shrivelish.....but otherwise i really like this! i think you should definitely do more portraits

thanks!
i did have some difficulty with the hands, esp. the left (to our right) hand. i hope to refine this realistic style of drawing over time...

Isn't it awesome to find out you still have skill after several years of not doing it..the thumbnail looked like a photo, Very awesome job on the portraiture, I must say!! I went through 10 years of not doing anything, then suddenly picked up a pencil to do drawings for x-mas presents and I have to say after awhile of not doing anything, I was surprised by the people's reactions and the results of the efforts!! Keep it up!!

(though I would expect the dark side of his head to disappear into the black rather than be so well defined!)
