Name: Iris Starbright

Orientation: Aro-Ace Female

Height: 5'5” (165cm)

Birthday: 4th April

Notable Relationships:

  • None

Personality

Iris is an adventurous sort, though one who prefers going solo where she can. She is both book smart and world smart, giving her a balanced mentality. Despite this, her enjoyment of exploration and adventure can override this, making her come across as brash or hasty to those coming across her out and about or on a mission.

In the lab, Iris is usually well-focussed on her work, making and tuning equipment to her heart's content. She enjoys her job with the Establishment greatly.

Likes

Iris' main interest in life is an adventure and exploring, and oftentimes can be found searching places around the area of the Establishment or even further afield. Whether it's an old ruin, a forgotten cave, even a forest, if she has not been there before it will have Iris' attention.

Despite being signed up for the scout team in the Establishment, the low number of expeditions into worlds anew and high number of anti-anomaly crew to handle incursions means Iris is often in the normal world and helping in the tech lab, which luckily is her second interest. In particular, she has taken interest in the strange relics which were found on Gil and trying to replicate them in technology, though the project is very much in its infancy and has unfortunately not had many successes. Despite that, whenever Kai, Alice and Jenny are in the Establishment, she takes the opportunity to investigate the mystic artifacts further.

When not working or exploring, Iris enjoys reading, mostly historic texts and recountings of legendary locations though she has also been known to read fantasy novels too. Her taste in music is varied, though leaning towards pop-punk and rock music. Similar to Alice, Iris has a great sweet tooth as her frame alludes to, though she is also a big fan of Italian cuisine, including pizza and pasta.

Dislikes

Even though she enjoys books and learning, Iris detests being cooped up inside, much preferring to be outside in new surroundings while partaking in her hobbies. Even in winter she can be found in caves or under trees reading, though to her chagrin usually bundled up in thick, bulky clothes, a pet peeve yet a necessary evil.

Although functional in smaller groups and even enjoying the company of certain people around her, Iris loathes to be in large crowds, and even more sound loud groups. She has a reputation in the Establishment for throwing things at louder persons in the lab, even higher-ups in more than one occasion, though accidentally so.

When exploring, Iris loves a small, enclosed space, whether that be a tunnel or nook, a crawlspace or a crevasse, anywhere which could be hiding something more is of huge interest to her. In spite of this, Iris dislikes spaces which are too small. She has been known to get wedged in a spot after misjudging the size of an opening, driven by the intrigue of mysteries.

Most of all, Iris dislikes being 'hit on' after first brushing someone off. While happily identifying as aromantic asexual, she does not like to broadcast the fact to strangers at random, and being pushed into doing so to make someone back off gets to be irritating for her.

Powers & Abilities

Iris has minor magical abilities following her joining the Establishment, though her abilities are limited. She has shown greater prowess with barrier-type spells than offensive or restraintive spells, but even these are weak. During training, her barriers could stop two to three rounds of small-arms fire before failing, and since then little improvement has been made.

Despite her lacking magical prowess and lack of a bonded relic, Iris has excelled in self-defense and can hold her own against most normal attackers. Her true abilities however are in her hobbies, including being adept at orienteering, pathfinding and tracking. Iris also possesses high intellect and good problem-solving skills which helps with her job in the tech lab. Iris is also skilled in reading many languages, chiefly older 'dead' languages such as Latin, ancient Sumerian and Atlantean.

History

Iris was a city kid for the first 8 years of her life, though she detested the noise and the hustle-and-bustle offered. Because of this, her way of playing tended to revolve around shutting herself in her small room in her parents' apartment with headphones on to block out the noise.

Her family's fortunes took a turn when her father passed away in a work-related incident when she was 7 and her mother was unable to keep up with the cost of the big city, eventually leading to them moving to a much smaller town on the outskirts of the country just over a year later. The peaceful and safe space allowed a young Iris the opportunity to explore and come out of her shell, discovering properly what interests her and what does not.

At age 14, Iris asked her mother about crushes, feeling she had never had one on her schoolmates and wondering why. It was here she learned about orientations outside of simply gay or straight, and the first inkling that she might be aro-ace, something she would not confirm until she was 17 after being forced by friends to try out dating apps and having no interest in the dates or other users.

Iris' involvement with the Establishment began when she was 18, after she sought out apprenticeships to further her learning in the local community due to the lack of higher learning facilities nearby. Her high test scores caught the attention of the research and development division, who offered her a place as a junior assistant. Iris, however, declined the offer initially as the role involved too much restriction and prevented her from undertaking fieldwork. As the R&D department did not want to lose her, they put her into the field agent training program with the promise of a higher position in the tech lab should she succeed. Though gruelling as a process, Iris made it and was appointed a Grade II Developer position.

Three years after her appointment, Iris was introduced to new recruits Alice, Jenny and Kai for equipping ahead of a new expedition into an unknown world. Despite being initially sour about being left out of this exploration, Iris was silently relieved to have been passed over when the team lost contact. During the lost team's adventure in Gil, Iris was assigned to an expedition to a newly discovered cavern closer to home, something much more her speed and in which her research into ancient linguistics helped to decipher an odd device and its purposes within the ruins. She received a commendation after going back into a flooded tunnel to assist her fellows, granting her the position of Junior Field Technician.

When Alice, Jenny and Kai finally returned from Gil, Iris took interest in their relics and began work on trying to replicate their functionality. Both Jenny and Kai have been of particular assistance on this, the former by lending Iris the relic temporarily to help with understanding, and the latter by his understanding of metallurgy. Alice has also assisted with her research, though has been less willing to lend her relics to experimentation.

With the team back, Iris continues to work on the problem of replicating the relics, and has been known to pay them visits to test the prototypes. Oddly, Iris tends to book some time off prior to this. Perhaps she learned after a mishap at Jenny's...
