Description
I've never done this type of photography before, I rented a studio light and these were my shots of my friend [link] and I messing around with the lighting. Out of a couple hundred, this is one of my favorites.Maybe I'm naive but I've been told you have to go art school to take these type of shots, this is first time ive ever shot lighted situations with no experience at all, do you really need 'formal' education for this stuff?

I think it just takes a little creativity, and your imagination, with that, you can do anything and you dont even need formal classes to show you that. This a fantastic photo, I love it

Formal education for photography? I really don't think so. Unless you don't know how to use the internet, there's no need in my opinion. The only thing an expensive course could offer are more expensive cameras and environments to work with. Information-wise, there are tens of thousands of videos, tutorials, good posts, etc. online.

I'll be honest... school really sucks big times!
If you're not able to do such things by yourself, you won't do much better in art school xD!
But man! What a nice first try !!!
More to come?
I'd like to see some over the time to see your evolution, i'm convinced that you're able to do great things

awesome thanks, if you've noticed ive slowly been moving towards lighting photography, i think its important to get people in my shots now, but first i have to learn the lighting, itll be a long process

Hahaha.
I think anyone can really take a picture. I think you just need the education because maybe you must be "smart" to work a camera, or lighting. I don't know. *Shrugs* That is a bit stupid.
Beautiful picture.

I think I got you there. Other than learning the basics, exppsure, fstop, your camera settings and how to adjust them, it's pretty easy from there. I read this like 2,000 page book on everything technical about cameras, it's helped but as for teaching creativity in schooling, that's just not happening

Thorn-Kat-17 In reply to Studio5 [2009-08-01 18:31:45 +0000 UTC]
I don't think you can "teach" creativity no matter how hard you try. You can teach techniques, but creativity isn't "taught".
But yeah.
2000 page book?
I'd never finish it. I'd be like, screw this I'll figure it out on my own.

yea i agree, you can teach techniques which might give you access to more types of shots that you can be creative in, but you cant really teach the creativeness itself
It was on all that stuff about how f-stop works, exposure, hyperfocal distance, the stuff you dont really need to know about when snapping a shot, but helps to really know everything about a camera and how your eyes work with it, its was pretty interesting ahah

I don't think you need "formal" education for art to be good at it. But it might make it easier.
I love the droplets flying up. They almost look like stars.

Studio5 In reply to vynn-beverly [2009-08-01 18:26:50 +0000 UTC]
yea im sure. I feel that you just have to keep testing every possible combination of lighting, exposure, angle, etc. until you can imagine what a shot will look like before you take it. Once your that good at seeing the shot, you can't mess up.
Maybe you do need formal education becuase I dont know the terminology. I just call the lighting a light thing.
