Description
This is Curly, the imaginitively named Curly-Haired Tarantula (Brachypelma albopilosum)Before handing her to Katie I let her walk on my hand. She didnt seem to want to walk and had to be encouraged gently to climb aboard

amazing. ive just got two first tarantuals today. i have a curly haired spiderling and a young 1.5-2inch chaco golden knee. how to you teach them to walk on your bare hand. i want them to be relaxed and not bite me lol.i wouldnt touch the golden knee at the moment though becuase its coming up to a molt, but when it actually molts?? i have no clue, the breeder says he may be like this for a coupe days to a month D:
wish he'd hurry up and shed :/

Basically you dont! A tarantula is never a pet, it is still a wild animal, but these species are pretty tame so shouldn't bite. Also they shouldn't really be handled, its not good for them. I realised this and I dont handle them anymore.

oh i understand that, i only want to handle them in the case of cleaning, health check (like if i spot something unusual on them) or if they're stuck on the door and i need to move them.

Yea thats the only reason.I handle them now, but they never really need cleaning out. Heres a tip, put some woodlice in with them. Spiders dont like to eat them and theyre great tank cleaners!

Woodlice seriously?? i have never heard that lol thanks thats actually really interesting, do i just pick them out from the garden because i dont want to bring any extra nastys with them that might hurt the T

Well thats what I do but really you should keep them in a seperate tub for a week or two on quarantine before introducing them to the T. But I never bothered with that! Ive also fed my Ts worms and slugs!

I think he means small maggots. Ive never tried them mainly because they can be smelly if not eaten soon enough, and if you buy a pot you'll have loads. Plus they turn into blowflies. I use crickets and mealworms. Mealworms last forever, they just need paper to eat and a bit of water,no smell.

okay, i'll go for mealworms. . . they eat paper? O.o thats handy and unusual. they should be fine for the spiderling, im going to feed the bigger one brown crickets. Oh but what if the mealworms dig? would the spiderling still find them?
Sorry if im annoying you but your being really helpful

Dont worry about the mealworms digging, the spiders hunt by feel ot by sight and they'll detect the movement and wait. Also if they do get themselves buried they will just turn into beetles,-more food for the Ts!

When I worked in the ZIP Squad (Zoo Interpretation Programme) at Twycross Zoo,
I used to have 2 Red Knees curled up under my long hair, on my shoulders when I
talked to the public, with a shrug, one or both would come out & walk down
my arms. You should have seen the looks
