Description
This is my first proper picture since I took some time out to work on Zombie Ted so I thought I'd treat myself. The Phantom.
One of my favourite superheroes since I was a child and I know almost nothing about him. Just the movie, some cartoons (Defenders Of The Earth and Phantom 2040) and a handful of comics I've picked up over the years. Bu my god do I love the Phantom.
Incidentally, I may have upgraded my art style over the last few months.

This looks great! When you posted it on Facebook, I thought you were posting an image from the official comics! It just has that classic comic feel and look to it. I'm digging all the fine details
I don't know if he ever got big over here in the States, I've only learned of him from a Swedish guy I like to watch play terrible games. I always associate The Phantom to this story now: X

Thanks - that's exactly what I was aiming for. I'm really glad you like it.
The Phantom is actually an American character. Not being in America myself I couldn't say for certain but presumably he was famous there in his original era (along with the Shadow, Mandrake The Magician, Flash Gordon etc) but became less prominent as Marvel and DC took the comics world by storm.
Which is to say , I'm surprised he's not more well known in America.
I am so glad he kept going in Europe though, even if it does mean I just listened to the moment some poor Swedish guy died on the inside.
To be honest, I don't think his European popularity ever stretched as far as the UK though. My exposure is largely the result of this rather wonderful masterpiece youtu.be/5xLKzsynt5I though I have to admit I wouldn't class the cartoon as a classic.

I assume he had enough popularity when he first came out to make his way overseas and retain some popularity. All I know is that he's older than Batman but did not have the same longevity in American pop culture that Batman did. Its kinda sad, but yeah, never hear anyone talk about the Phantom over here in the states!
Defenders of the Earth is ringing a bell for me, maybe somewhere deep in my childhood memories, there are moments I consumed said cartoon. Even if not a masterpiece, sometimes those cartoons are just pure gold.
