Description My contribution to Team Octoling for Turf War Zine
Charity Art book, which raised money to give children's hospitals (nintendo) games!

This was inspired by how I think ruined Octarian world is like. The Inklings took over the surface with their capitalism, forcing Octarians underground. Inklings use all the resources, forcing Octarians to take desperate measures by establishing a militant socialist society. Octolings grow up fearing the Inklings and go to war because all the schools have been abandoned or destroyed.

Or, Octolings are supersoldiers created from splicing Octarian and Inkling DNA. Really?

This piece has a different light after the sequel and the Octo Expansion: word of Octoling defectors, AND an Octoling SAVING THE WORLD is gonna spread fast.
Reconciliation may be on the way.

Aggressive.... and social.... I'm not sure how those two attributes can fit together.
Social among equals and aggressive among anything else, seeing themself as the master race (Similar to how we humans think we are above everything)?

It's weird thinking that such a colourful and happy themed game could actually be that sad lore wise. I mean, I guess that's every war in existance, but then again, Nintendo never makes you feel bad for the bad guys.
Never felt bad for any Gumba so far, they're just mindless grunts >_> Actually, this makes me wonder if Splatoon's "Bad guys" are really that bad

Anyways, fantastic artwork

Octarians are feudalist, not socialist. They represent the old Imperial Japan while the Inklings represent modern Japan.

This one is just a guess, but I think most Octarians dont 't take on humanoid forms because that's what the Inklings are doing. Maybe they consider the tentacle form appropriate because the average Octarian is supposed to be only an instrument of his shogun's will, or they think immitating humans in any way is wrong, because those have almost destroyed the world in the past. The more specialized Octarian soldiers may take on alternative forms that benefit their role in combat, and Octolings are the ultimate exception, for the purpose of fighting Inklings with their own abilities.

thats pretty good observation. Though not sure that the inklings or octolings are imitating humans on purpose. The sunken scrolls imply they have little knowledge about humans and from what they know, they think humans are inferior.

This is truly one of the most spectacular piece I have seen on this site to date, hands down. This is absoulty a chilling peek into the world of Splatoon, one that makes players realize that the matter of good and evil may not be so simple in this work of fiction.

The details in the background is gorgeous, the landscape is beautifully haunting, and the lone Octoling on the desk of a ruined school creates both a sense of empathy for the enemy and sorrow for her wrecthed existence. I applaud you sir! Keep up the great work!

I dunno, I think the supersoldier thing lends itself to a cool sequel hook: Agent 3 and an Octoling in a kind of buddy-cop adventure where the Octoling is the stern, serious person who's out-of-touch with normal society, and Agent 3 is the irresponsible, combative, reckless one. Each of them needing to reign in the other and help them work through their flaws.

According to few sunken scrolls, it's pretty much canon that not every single octarian fights in the military (like in the one that announces that there are electricity shortages . That octarian there looks like a politician to me). But that the Octarian world is very ruined? Yes. Sometimes I pity them, it looks sad to live like that

PS.: I just found your gallery, get ready for a favourite stream

looking into Octovalley gave me a lot of sympathy for the octarians. There's even a manga in the Ikasu art book explaining how this future came to be. I can't read Japanese, thouogh

thanks for favs!

My sympathy began when I started overanalyzing every little piece of info about Octo Valley
!! I didn't know that! I gotta look for it and hope somebody translated it

You're welcome

interestingly, some panels from the manga can be seen in the Splatoon single player trailer. Nintendo didn't make a big deal out of it, but there's a ton more story art than just the sunken scrolls! I'm waiting for the english ikasu artbook, too

Unfortunately, once war has begun, there's no going back...

The Octolings could be studing and having a normal life

And I just love how you used the screens, that's what causes such 'destructive' atmosphere

It's still sad tho

My dad was a child soldier for some time during the salvadoran civil war in the 80s. He once told me that not much changed in his life (he still went home, played with his friends, etc...) and that he honestly liked much more being a soldier than going to school.

This was my favorite piece in the octoling zine!! I love the feeling of it, and it reminded me of Portal 2 a little bit. Mostly this started playing in my head: www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-Vg2Y…

Anyway like I said definitely my favorite piece of the zine. You did an amazing job and you should be very proud!! C:

wow, thank you so much! I'm glad you are enjoying the zine; a lot of passion was put into that book by everyone.

I played Portal 2 but I don't remember that song! It is quite mesmerizing. I should go back to Aperture and find it. I agree, being an Octoling must be similar to a trapped test subject.

It's based on the sunken scrolls : (spoilers?) splatoonwiki.org/wiki/File:Sun…

I think this is how octarians portray the inklings
