You know, I liked that episode, but...there are so many plot holes.
First of all, WHY DIDN'T THE BROTHERS HAVE THEIR OWN APPLES? And why would the Apple family keep refusing to charge them for the fruit they gave the Bros.? The whole episode would've been over with one "No, but we'll sell you some. We could use some extra customers."
Also, that deal they offered....I'm not sure how the Apples would've lost money with that deal, if they also kept producing their own Cider alongside what the Bros. produced. Okay, 75-25 SOUNDS bad, but if you keep in mind that the Squeezy 6000 can make 3 barrels for the Apples one...that's actually a fair deal based solely on who is converting more apples into cider.
Okay, going by the contest, they actually produced 500% of the normal amount and Rainbow Dash STILL only barely got any. So, there is actually more demand for Cider in Ponyville than the Bros. could produce (in the same time that the Apples usually spent on making Cider. But this isn't much of an issue because the Machine needs constant, if lazy, time investment from the brother's magic powering it. They can't just let it run on automatic. Which means the Apples can spend as much time as they need to producing Cider.)
So, there's really three outcomes.
Let's say that the Apples can produce 100 Barrels and the Bros. can produce 300 barrels. And each Barrel will turn a profit of 50 bits worth of Cider. Unless somepony plays a price game or there's a demand shortfall...there is only 20,000 bits to be made.
This means that the Appels would get 5000 bits at the end of the day if the Bros. never interfered.
A-If the Apples leave all production to the Bros. (likely leaving poor Rainbow high and dry yet again), the Cider will sell for 15000 bits. The Apples would lose money, getting 3750 MINUS the cost of the fruit they used to the Bros.' profit: 11250. So this is the only way that the Apple family COULD lose money. (Aside from not getting a cut of the profits at all.)
B-But, if they made AND sold an extra 100 barrels and added that to the Bros. stash (giving Ponyville a whooping 400 barrels and leaving fewer loyal customers hanging, although they are still suffering in a long-ass Stalingrad line.) The Apples will get....5000 bits, the same as if they had never heard of the Flimflams. Now, they DO lose the apples that they could've sold for a 100% if they found buyers. (the same fruit that they are just GIVING away, mind you, probably because they need money RIGHT NOW rather than apples that might go rotten if they don't find a buyer). The Bros. would be the real winners here, as they would make 15000 bits. 3750 extra bits (the entire cut the Apples would get if we did Option A) that they did NOTHING to deserve, but still leaves the Apple family no worse off than they were while disappointing a fewer ponies who slept in line.
C-But, the smartest thing they could do is produce the extra 100 barrels...and sell those themselves without giving the Bros a cut. This should be legal because they didn't use anything of the Bros. to produce these extra barrels. Anyway. The Apples get the 5000 PLUS the 3750 bits. 8750 bits to the Brother's 11250. Also, two different stands to sell Cider will make lines a little more bearable for the residents of Ponyville. Hopefully.
D-For the sake of completeness, there is also what would happen if the Bros. got their Apples from some other supplier (or covertly stole the Apples or something): Its identical in Profit divides to B, but there are two stands like in C. But it does create a competitor for Sweet Apple Acres...although I'm not sure why this has to be the end of the world because of such insane demand for Cider in Ponyville.
The other thing I don't like is how the brothers, while muscling in on the Apple's territory and being kind of dicks, aren't really doing anything wrong. They were obviously our antagonists, but they were actually making life easier for all of Ponyville. Maybe if they demanded an even bigger cut or something...
Now, had the Bros tried to take over Sweet Apple Acres with Turrets....that would've been an Episode!

Well, any smart person would do what they could to take advantage of mass-production PLUS quality labor. The way I look at it is that if you combined the quality of products that the Apple family created with the efficiency and production rate of the Flim-Flam Brothers' invention, you'd certainly have a lot of satisfied customers and bit better quality of life.
But because of how backwards society is in Equestria, such a thing couldn't happen.
Likewise, to go with the subject of the picture, why wouldn't you use both weapons as opposed to one or the other? The sentry is good, strong defensive weapon that can protect a specific amount of area, but it's limited to one location. Likewise, while the little robotic turrets are rather weak and easily defeated, I'm pretty sure a good 10 of them patrolling a location would make quite a painful distraction. As always, a zerg rush can do something...
