The M315 MGS is part of the Modular Armored Fighting Vehicle-3 series, the MAFV-3 was an entry to the Next Generation Armored Modular Vehicle program by the Ryan Aerospace Enterprises. It uses wheels with skid drive instead of the usual tracked design its competitor uses.

The MAFV-3 was cheaper to produce and maintain compared to its competitor such as the M9 Lee. However it was less armored and despite its rather cheap price tags, it would lose to the M9 Lee.

While it may lose to the M9 Lee tracked AFV series, it wasn't doomed to become a museum piece, it found its place within the Defense Forces of many planets in the United Earth Federation complementing the more expensive M9 Lee.

Many planets with smaller defense budget within the United Earth Federation chosen the MAFV-3 due to it being cheaper to acquire and maintain, and its modularity which gave it the capability to mount similar armaments to the M9 Lee, its modularity spawned several variants such as the M312 Defender APC, M313 Defender IFV, M314 Defender ATGM, M315 Defender MGS, and the M316 Defender SHORAD.

This particular variant is the M315 Defender MGS, it's armed with a 120mm light-gas gun in a two-man turret and a 15mm Heavy Machine Gun on a remote weapon system.

The MAFV-3 uses an advanced plastic carbon composite armor alongside an aluminum structure to ensure a light base weight, it can also be equipped with additional armors to increase its protection.

It's also equipped with a pair of Iron Curtain High-power Hardkill Laser Active Protection System capable of intercepting missiles and high explosive rounds up to 1km range.
