Admittedly, I cheated, this one was hand assembled, but the message is the same.did something like this in: [link]
However, those were meant to be shown off, while the ones I'm bringing up were created randomly, then put aside with the words "I'll use her for something soon...soon...soon...etc."
Their DNA is going to be left stagnant and rot away, until the character becomes an ill-conceived idea gathering dust and cobwebs in the back of their creator's mind. I can't really stand this, it feels so...wrong.
Keep in mind that I don't actually do this. I make a conscious effort NOT to do so, instead only making a character if I'm in need of one. As someone who loves random odds and random generation, even I CANNOT tolerate this.
Now please, if you have characters like this, use them for something. If you realize that you can't, then adopt them out to someone, don't let the poor characters suffer. ;_;

Imo the most you're getting out of this is if you need a random background character for something, adjusting a few things to appropriately match the intended type of character needed.

Wait, I have a brilliant idea! I'm currently working on two comic series that I'll submit here on DA soon.
I'm already thinking about a third story to make in the far future... what do you think about collaborating with me when that time comes? Sayara strikes me as an interesting character from what I read in her comic series, and I want to make her the main character of said third story.

I don't think you grasped the message of Spaz's comic... it wasn't so much 'OCs are people too!', because they're not. They're fictional constructs you use to tell a story.
What the point of Spaz's comic was 'OCs need to actually be characters. Used in stories. That's their purpose. Not to show off how 'creative' you are, or for you to make and hope that others draw fanart of them, etc etc. In other words, Spaz was saying 'Write something and use OCs, don't just create them for no reason'.

I personally feel as if characters are an entity that can feel, but that's not the point I'm making here.
This was in response to a rising trend on the station wagon where people would hit the random button, think what they got was cool, make it into a character, then never use them again. Instead they clog things up with multiple empty shells with no purpose. It's not even to show off, they just create them, never use them, and when they have need of a characters they never actually draw from the pool of characters they've randomly generated.
Not only is it a waste of time, it's running down their luck. I mean, how often do you get something worthwhile on the randomizer? I guess I failed to get my message across in the end. :/

Ah, well, that message is very close, if not, exactly what Spaztique was trying to get across. Yeah, to me, an OC should be injected with character, given complex motives and reasons, like a full-on person, however, a writer should always remember not to get TOO attached to a character and remember it is a fictional construct... I'm not talking in a philosophical manner here, I'm talking in a logical, real-world truth- OCs are NOT real, and not people that can ACTUALLY get hurt.
I think this because... if I didn't, I'd be afraid to let characters get hurt, or have gone through trauma, or face consequences for decidedly jerkassy actions from a certain point of view. In other words, to allow for conflict, realism, and a little interest in one's story, one must always keep the fictionality of one's characters in mind, remembering they are in fact devices, not people.

Ah, I guess I'm old fashioned or something, but I see that putting the characters through hard times, pain, misery, is a way to toughen them up. (What does not kill you, makes you stronger.) So even though I consider them to have their own consciousness, I don't hold back for their own good.
Also, I am simply responding to a more recent trend in the station wagon. Spaz replied to people who put together detailed profiles, deliberately created characters, then leaving them as such. I'm speaking out more against the random generation of characters, polishing them, then never even giving them a personality. They're hollow shells with names, and while that seems like a valuable resource to have, I've yet to see it drawn upon.
I have no idea if I'm explaining this very well. :/

...very rarely does any good come from such a process.
