Description I will not admit defeat. I saw a picture of the Rocketeer and I thought, ah yes! A metal mask and a quick color change would transform my Hulk drawing into a totally different character. Pretty sneaky thing those masks, no wonder so many super heroes wear them.

That gave me the idea for a new super hero comic, what if there was a super hero like Superman who fought for truth justice and the American way, but he got so fed up with being nice and not harming the scumbag criminals that he decides to put on a mask and moonlight as a totally different super hero and just beat the living crap out of bad guys and blow their houses up with his laser eyes. That would be pretty cool. Now which comics editor who is not returning me e-mails should I send that to?

Neat idea.

Esp if he strips down to skin or something his normal 'persona' would not be seen dead wearing.

I think you're a bit late with that idea -- does the name 'Rorschach' ring any bells?

Watchmen Rorschach? how so? Wasn't he always Rorschach, he just sort of descended into madness (or saneness, depending on how you view his arch.)

Steve you have so many great, crazy comics character & story ideas and for some reason you JUST NEVER EXECUTE THEM!!!! I don't know why - and it drives me crazy. Maybe because I would just like to read them. Hey no publisher is interested in publishing my stories and characters either so I just draw them and print them up myself (in limited numbers to keep costs down) at this print-on-demand place:

...and sell my books through the store page on my website.

I spend nothing on distribution or advertising. And I still get about 3 or 4 orders (on average) a month, which is more than enough to cover my costs for the next batch of books I get printed up. In other words, it cost a little time and money to get started but now it's at the point where the books are basically paying for themselves. And the orders - and new readers - just keep coming in. There is great satisfaction in this and guess what, even though the profits are small, at least I don't have to share them with anybody else. It CAN BE DONE - without an established publisher - these days, thanks to the internet. Now I wish you would just DO IT. ...Only because I would love to actually read your crazy stories. And hey look you got one garaunteed sale right here.

One key element: Time. If I want to be a good hubby and dad I try to be home every night by 6 from my studio. I don't really have time to draw anything that isn't going to pay the bills. I've figured out I can write a whole lot faster than I can draw so I've been trying to get some paying writing credits, but all the companies who will hire me go under, renig on deals, or never publish the work. I've kind of got a friend working at DC now, maybe a door there will open up.

Heck, one well known best selling suspense author knocked me off two book adaptations of his work after I had completed and had an approved outline and first issues. Apparently I was not a "big enough name" to be associated with him and so he gave the work to a guy who only had one published writing cred.

It will happen, I'm getting better at the craft. I'm working on a slim downed style where I can feasibly do a page in 2 to 3 hours instead of my current 10.

So what are you saying? That you have plenty of extra free time to pour into writing projects for big companies that leave you high and dry - but you don't have time to play with your own creations?

Seriously, I just don't buy the old "I don't have time" excuse from artists anymore. I know too many artists with no marriage and no kids who make the same excuse not to pursue their goals. Then I know other artists who have day jobs, wives and kids, and still make time to do cool projects on the side. If you WANT to do something you MAKE time for it. That's all I'm saying. But I hope you know I am only challenging you a little bit because I would love to read your crazy stories.

I hear what you are saying and appreciate it. I have stuff I haven't shown which are works in progress.

And to be fair, the work for the big companies were paying gigs when they were offered to me. In both those instances I was attached to the projects for a couple years. I had already read the novels and was familiar with the work so it was pretty easy to every moth work on them for a few hours. Writing is faster than drawing.

Still I appreciate the encouragement. Right now with no steady paying work and my publisher being slow on getting me an advance check I just can't dedicate time to anything that doesn't pay.

Well I know that feeling too - when you are caught in between paying gigs and can't afford to put any time into projects that don't promise financial gain. I have been there before. Can't blame you for that one. But I hope eventually when things are running a little smoother you'll ignore the side jobs and focus a little time on your own ideas. Every one of them that you mention on a whim on DA gets a chuckle out of me. And if you need any advice on the self-printing-self-publishing stuff I will be happy to give you a few pointers!

I'll definitely hit you up for some pointers. When I finally do get something self-published it will be in a big part because of your encouragement and seeing how much fun you have with Wulf and Batsie.

It's happened in professional wrestling before... even Andre the Giant once put on a mask to be one member of the three-man tag team The Machines... he was... "Giant Machine."

Those wrestlers, they are such innovators.

Love me some Andre the Giant, RIP.
