Your strokes flow across the page with the grace of Yoshitaka. I'm jealous.

Man its so rare to find any good FFIV fanart. This is a really good rendition of them, though I think Barbariccia kind of looks like a guy, the face has very angular strokes. Nontheless this is pretty awsome stuff, takes me way back.

Well I'm no expert since I don't draw (though an art appreciator) but in my opinion part of the problem are the angular strokes, though I understand its part of the style they tend to accentuate the angular facial features guys have (which greatly compliments Rubicante in this drawing btw) like the chiseled chin and nose, but unfortunately makes Barbariccia look rather masculine. Women generally have more rounded faces with soft rounded features whereas guys are usually portrayed with longer faces and more rigid features (if the masculinity is to be emphasized).

If I may I'm going to reference your older works to demonstrate.

In your FFVII pic ([link] ) you can see this same issue with Tifa's face. You drew her with a somewhat downcast face which makes her face seem a tad longer than it probably should be, that along with the almost flat chin and chiseled eyes and nose make Tifa look a tad masculine (despite how tough she is xD). On the other hand Aerith is a lot softer with a more round outline for the face and rounded facial features which made her come out quite lovely if I do say so myself, as one of the previous comments stated: 'believable but still like Aerith'.

The other thing I noticed is that you don't encounter this problem when drawing faces at a frontal view such as Yuffie in the previous drawing and Terra in the FFVI pic ([link] ), both drawn with round faces and look feminine.

In the "Celes, Rydia, Faris" pic ([link] ) Rydia came out great I think, Celes kinda loses a bit of that feminine quality with the rough shoulders (and I see another problem occuring around the top of the head, though that's a different issue I think, her head looks almost flat), and Faris is extremely borderline, which I may add is a great thing, I think you seriously nailed it with her character due to her role ingame.

I hope I'm not coming off as a jerk by critiquing your older works (and with a limited background in fine arts), but overall I encounter people who have similar issues with their drawings and they just simply can't put their finger on what the problem is, I'm just trying to shed some light on the issue and hopefully help you out in the long run. I'm a graphic design student myself and despite my lack of drawing ability and fine art background, I mostly enjoy working with photographs of women and from the years of staring at the human body (and studying it a bit in my old figure drawing class) I've learned what features tend to distinguish the male and female form. I'm also a big fan of the manga/anime style and I'm quite familiar to the characteristics associated with that artstyle. I myself hope to draw as well as you someday but I just simply don't have the time to draw yet (and I lack the discipline to learn atm). Maybe someday after I finish college I can seriously get into it and hope to get in years of practice to produce my own illustrations, I feel that my lack of drawing ability is really hindering my designs, as if I can't really illustrate them at their full potential which is why I started focusing strictly on photomanipulations. Oh well, enough of me ranting, I hope all goes well for you in your future drawings and hopefully I helped a tiny bit.

oh wow, @_@ haha.

No, actually, I really appreciate that you'd write so much down to help, and I'll probably take your advice-- you're right about me being a major fan of angular strokes, i found they make me feel like i'm creating more form than curves at some point and can't get off them. so yeah, i get a lot of people who think my females all look too male - which is interesting, it used to be the other way around in middle school ! ( [link] ) I've come to be such a huge fan of the male form and features - namely, the 'chiseled' look - that i like to see it on most allt he faces i draw. it's partly why i enjoy drawing faris so very much, haha.

I'm not sure if it'll be evident immediately, but I definitely will take your thoughts to heart, and try to create more appealing art! part of it, I think, is to desensitise the part of myself that, because of my old style, is very averse to drawing anything 'too feminine'. But again, thanks a ton for your thoughts.
