I got really tired of taking so long coming up with a even remotely decent pose, so I am going to take the bull by the horns and start studying the construction of poses a bit more thoroughly. You can expect more studies like this in the coming days.

The idea behind this is to avoid starting with the details. Instead, the concept is something like this:

  • Locate the joints in the pose, and mark them somehow (small balls in the sketch).

  • Join the joints with lines, to get an idea about how your pose will look. At this point you will see if the pose is balanced the way you want it to be.

  • Now is the time to start building the body. Use basic shapes as long as possible - your goal is to add volume to your figure.

  • If everything looks decent, you can start adding details and work your way toward a final result, which will vary depending on what style and medium you are aiming for.

  • I want to thank so much for providing the poses that I used as reference for this. They are SO helpful!
