Clay Fite
5 yrs old
He was severely burned in a gasoline explosion on Valentine's Day. Clay's being home schooled for kindergarten. But today, therapists from Parkland Hospital in Dallas came to answer students' questions. They explained that even though Clay may not look the same now, he's still the same Clay they knew before.

Great photo, man. I watched the video and read through some of Clay's blog. I cried for most of that time. What a horrible accident.
I find it extraordinary and admirable that the family does not seem to dwell on anyone's guilt and instead focuses forward and, if anything, intensifies their love for each other.
When I was young, I used to ride a public bus (not school bus) to school in the next town. At a stop in a suburb, twice a youth of about 18 years got on the bus to ride into town. Well, he didn't actually "get on the bus". He used to stand far away from the bus stop on the other side of the street, close to the wall at the corner of a building, hiding. When the bus stopped, he ran across the street and jumped through the open bus door. I do not remember where and how he sat or stood, I only remember that most of his face was gone, he had no nose, only a hole in his face, and all of the skin was scarred. I don't know if he was burned or what had happened to him, I couldn't bring myself to look at him after that first quick glance, and everyone else ignored him as well. It must have been hell for him. I still think of that young man every now and then, more than twenty years later, wondering what became of him. I only saw him twice, and never again.
I hope the other kids can learn to be friends with Cole (again). I think love and friendship are what he needs the most, more than surgery, though I hope that will go well and bring him relief from the torment that the scars must mean to him.
Sorry for that rambling, what I'd really like to do is hug that little boy or transfer as much joy and courage and healing to him as I could.
