If you can get a French translation, buy it. 'The Culture' started life in Consider Phlebas, a wide-screen space opera based on the Idiran-Culture war which eventually involved about 2% of the entire Milky Way Galaxy. It has been optioned for filming and may actually be in production. UoW, as its fans call it, was written earlier, then re-written and improved. Some people think it is the best 'Culture' novel, although I think 'Surface Detail' [link] , the latest, gives it a run for its money.
