This is my Whippet's sire, SBIS Ch. Starline's Reign On JC ROMX , (aka "Reign.") He was 14 years old when my dog was conceived via artificial insemination, and he is the #1 sire in the history of the breed. He died about 1 1/2 years ago, and this is my tribute to "The Great One."

I drew this for the raffle to help sponsor the American Whippet Club's National Specialty, which is being held this week near Boston. It's actually going to be sold through a silent auction tomorrow. My dog's breeder even said she plans to bid on it! Unfortunately, Reign's owner was not able to attend for some reason, so she won't get to see it or bid on it, but I'll be sending her a copy.

This is my first dog portrait, and only my 6th real graphite drawing ever. I tried new materials and techniques on this (like using a blending stump!), and although I was very unhappy with certain portions of it for a while, in the end, I think it came out pretty good. Some people thought it was a photo at first glance...

Materials: H, B, 2B 2mm leads; HB, 4B, 8B woodless graphite pencils; loose graphite applied with a paintbrush and eyeshadow applicator; blending stump; kneadable eraser.

Time: about 20 hrs over 2 weeks.
